USTA Georgia Victorious At Junior Cup

September 29, 2011 11:40 AM
Georgia celebrates its eighteenth straight win.
Geogia repeats and repeats and repeats, etc. in 14s, 16s and 18s
Georgia won the Southern Junior Cup for the eighteenth year in a row, but not without some tough competition. South Carolina and Tennessee joined Georgia in the Gold group and definitely held their own. Georgia was just too strong!
Congratulations to Georgia and their coaches Will Wright and Stephen Diaz. A very tight battle took place for second place between South Carolina and Tennessee, with South Carolina coming out on top 15-12.
North Carolina pulled out victories against Louisiana (21-6) and Arkansas (22-5) in the Silver division.
The first day North Carolina came out a bit sluggish and, before the realized what hit them, South Carolina had a huge lead. Coach Shane Wells and Kelly Parker had the kids ready right away at the beginning of the Silver division competition. The scores against Arkansas and Louisiana were a bit one sided but again tight matches throughout. The big victory for Arkansas was to make it to the Silver division, as this was the first time for them to reach that level for many years.
Alabama, Kentucky, and Mississippi battled in the Bronze division with Alabama coming out on top. They were just a bit too strong for Kentucky and Mississippi.
Congratulations to Louisiana, for they took the team sportsmanship award home with them, as each player received a watch. Good sportsmanship, great competition, beautiful weather and great food lead to a fun and exciting weekend.
The weekend culminated with our last good bye to many seniors/players, participating in the Junior Cup for the last time. We wish them all well and look forward to seeing some new faces in 2012.
Team Isner wins Southern Junior Cup 12s
Team Isner, coached by Roy Coopersmith of Arkansas, was victorious at the 2011 Southern Junior Cup 12s. Team Isner, consisting of Drew Baird, Kennedi Carter, Nicole Coopersmith, Paul Hendrix, Peyton Pesavento and Stephen Sadie played through two days of round robin play to win the Gold Division. They came out on top after beating Team Blake (Angel Carney, Brandon Freestone, Larry Qu, Aaron Skier, Vanessa Streng and Sylvia Viljoen) and Team Serena (Julia Adams, Anil Chakka, Chambers Easterling, Darius Kent, Hannah Lairmore and Emily Ory.
Congratulations also to Somer Henry, Caleb Buckman and Luke Plaisted for being selected as the Sportsmanship winners. They were selected by coaches, peers, parents, and officials. Quite an honor.
