U.S. Davis Cup And Olympic Team Members Headline The Gulf Coast Tennis Challenge

May 23, 2011 04:09 PM
US Davis Cup and Olympic team members Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, and Bob and Mike Bryan will headline the Gulf Coast Tennis Challenge on Monday, September 26, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at the Mobile Civic Center in Mobile, Alabama.

The always entertaining Murphy Jensen will host the event to benefit Distinguished Young Women, a national scholarship program for high-school girls headquartered in Mobile. In addition to the world class tennis match with Roddick, Fish, and the Bryan Brothers, there will be an exciting tie break shoot out featuring tennis players from the Gulf Coast area, including outstanding junior players.

"I look forward to returning to Mobile to support such a great cause,” said Andy Roddick. "Alabama’s Gulf Coast is a world-class tourist destination and we are excited to bring world-class tennis back to Mobile."

2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick has consistently been in the top ten for nine straight years, joining Roger Federer as the only active players to accomplish this feat. Roddick and Federer are also the only active players to win at least one title for 10 straight years. He leads the US Davis Cup Team this summer in his hometown of Austin, TX, against Spain. Roddick is joined by another top ten player, Mardy Fish, and the most successful doubles team in the world, twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan. They have been the World No. 1 doubles players for over 225 weeks. Between 2005 and 2006, they set an Open Era record by competing in seven consecutive men's doubles Grand Slam finals, three of which they won on their way to completing a career Grand Slam. On February 26, 2010, they recorded their Open Era record 600th match win.

"Bob and I appreciate the scholarship opportunities that Distinguished Young Women provides through this program,” said Mike Bryan. "We are very thankful that we completed our college educations at Stanford before going out on the ATP Tour. It was a great accomplishment in our lives and has helped us manage our careers and other interests."

“This will be an amazing night of tennis and family entertainment,” says Becky Jo Peterson, Executive Director of Distinguished Young Women. “It’s great that Andy, Mardy, Bob, and Mike are excited to come to Mobile and provide tennis fans with the best in tennis while benefiting our cause.”
