Seven Southern Teams Crowned USTA League National Champions

Seven USTA Southern teams have won 2010 USTA League National Championships: Men's 4.0 from Huntsville/Muscle Shoals, Ala.; 3.5 Women's from Little Rock, Ark.; Senior Men's 3.0 from Slidell, La.; Women's 3.0 from Memphis, Tenn. and Women's 2.5 from Rogers, Ark., 9.0 Mixed from Mandeville/Covington, La. and the 7.0 Mixed from Memphis, Tenn.
 
Second Louisiana Team crowned 2010 national champs
2010 USTA League 9.0 Adult National Champions from Mandeville/Covington, La.

The team from Mandeville/Covington, La. representing USTA Southern captured the national title at the USTA League 9.0 Adult Mixed Doubles National Championships held at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort in Tucson, Ariz. from Nov. 12 to Nov. 14.
 
The Mandeville/Covington team defeated a team from Fort Worth, Texas, 2-1 in the Championship match. Yesterday, the Mandeville/Covington team defeated a team from St. Louis, Mo. 2-1 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
 
The team is captained by Lisa Finley and features Celia Chien, Kasey Boudreau Speni, Therina Steenkamp, Bruce Smith, Joey Kuchler, John Ballard, Jon Buise, Jennings Edney and Jenn Thompson and plays at Stonecreek Club and Spa.
 
The top four teams in order of finish are: Southern, Texas, Missouri Valley and Florida.
 
 
 
Memphis claims another national title

The team from Memphis, Tenn. representing USTA Southern captured the national title at the USTA League 7.0 Adult Mixed National Championships held at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort in Tucson, Ariz. from Nov. 12 to Nov. 14.
 
The Memphis team defeated a team from Portland, Ore., 3-0 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Memphis team defeated a team from Honolulu, Hawaii 3-0 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
 
The team is captained by Devin Donaldson and features Lynn Isaacs, Perrin Hunter, Silvia Hecht, Lawrence Taylor, Shannon McCalla, Scott Day, Michael Garner, Kyle Christianson, Mark Goodfellow and Brian Cox and plays at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
 
The top four teams in order of finish are: Southern, Pacific Northwest, Texas, and Hawaii.
 
 
 
 
Little Rock 3.5 Women win National Championship

The women’s team from Little Rock, Arkansas, representing the USTA Southern Section captured the national title at the USTA League 3.5 Adult National Championships held at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Arizona from Oct. 29 to Oct. 31.
 
The Little Rock team defeated a team from Bellevue, Washington, 3-2 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Little Rock team defeated squad from Jacksonville, Florida, 3-2 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
 
The team is captained by Teresa Williams and features Annie Turchi, Dee Whalen, Beth Wilborne, Martha James, Mary Carolyn Bailey, Shannon Taylor, Catherine Edwards, Katie Alice Staggs, Jennifer Moline, Laurie Houff, Wende Walraven, Catherine Piaton and Mary Kathryn Nelson and plays out of the Little Rock Athletic Club.
 
The top four teams in order of finish are: Little Rock, Arkansas (Southern), Bellevue, Washington (Pacific Northwest), San Juan, Puerto Rico (Caribbean) and Jacksonville (Florida).
 
 
 
 
Alabama Men's 4.0 takes title

The men’s team from Huntsville and Muscle Shoals, Ala., representing the USTA Southern, captured the national title at the USTA League 4.0 Adult National Championships held at the Jim Reffkin Center in Tucson, Ariz., from Oct. 22 to Oct. 24.
 
The Huntsville/Muscle Shoals team defeated a team from Saint Paul, Minn., 3-2 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Southern team defeated a team from Phoenix, Ariz., 4-1 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
 
The team is captained by Paul Irvin and features Mark Rogers (co-captain), Billy McCarty, Harold Phillips, Todd Meckes, Kieran Byrne, Andrew Myrick, Jonathan Elston, Gregory Chando, Hilliard Powers and Jerrell Meares and plays at the Huntsville Athletic Club.
 
The top four teams in order of finish are: Southern, Northern, Texas and Southwest.

The Slidell team defeated a team from Cidra, Puerto Rico, 2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Slidell team defeated a team from Walnut Creek, Calif., 2-1 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.

Memphis 3.0 Women bring home National Championship

The women’s team from Memphis, Tenn., representing the USTA Southern Section, captured the national title at the USTA League 3.0 Adult National Championships held at the Jim Reffkin Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz., from Oct. 15 to Oct. 17.
 
The Memphis team defeated a team from Johnson Ranch, Calif., 4-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Memphis team defeated a team from Westchester County, N.Y., 4-1 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
 
The team is captained by Sherrie Cox and features Teresa Sokol, Catherine Williamson, Lynn O’Neill, Stephanie Wright, Kristin Hicks, Jacqueline Trobee, Melissa Hanshew and Michelle Tipton and plays at the Collierville Park and Recreation.
 
The top four teams in order of finish are: Southern, Northern California, Southern California and Eastern.
 
Rogers, Ark. Team wins national crown

The women’s team from Rogers, Ark., representing the USTA Southern Section captured the national title at the USTA League 2.5 Adult National Championships held at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif. from Oct. 1 to Oct. 3.
 
The Rogers team defeated a team from Oakland Calif., 2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Rogers team defeated a team from Caguas, Puerto Rico, 2-1 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
 
The team is captained by Beth Clark and features Kiki Hoener, Paula Kaufman, Carolyn Gilmore, and Alysia Treece and plays at the Shadow Valley Country Club in Rogers, Ark.
 
The top four teams in order of finish are: Southern, Northern California, Caribbean and Eastern.

The Savannah team lost to a team from Annapolis, 2-1, in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Savannah team defeated a team from Natick, Massachusetts, 2-1, in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
 
The team is captained by Janet Unckrich and features Susan Bedfor, Celest Demere, Becki Sasser, Cynthia Hucks-Smith, and Terri Eurek, and plays at Daffin Park in Savannah.
 
The top four teams in order of finish are: Mid-Atlantic, Southern, New England and Florida.

The Mandeville team lost to a team from Salt Lake City, Utah, 2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Mandeville team defeated a team from Westfield, N.J., 2-1 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
 
The team is captained by Kirk Wesson and features Hud Brand, Ryan Fanguy, Benjamin Kennedy, Joe Roy, and Mark Grayson.

2.5 Mixed team earns third spot

The 2.5 Mixed team from Mandeville, La. came in third at the 2010 USTA League 2.5 Mixed National Championship in Tucson, Ariz. Nov. 12-14.

4.5 Senior Men come in third in Nationals

The Senior Men's 4.5 team from Hilton Head Island, S.C. came in third in the USTA League 4.5 Senior National Championships held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. from Oct. 15 to Oct. 17.
 
The team representing USTA Southern defeated USTA Northern's team from St. Paul, Minn. to take the third spot on Sunday. On Saturday, the Fairfax team defeated the Hilton Head Island team 2-1 in the semifinals.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Lafayette, La.'s 3.5 senior men earns third place

The 3.5 senior men's team from Lafayette, La. and representing USTA Southern defeated Texas 3-0 to earn a third place finish at the USTA 3.5 Senior National Championships in Indian Wells, Calif. The championships were played Oct. 8-10.
 
The team led by captain Gabe Fortier lost the semifinal match to Hawaii 2-1. Hawaii went on to win the national crown over New England.
 
This year’s USTA League 2.5 Adult National Championship has drawn the top 29 teams (12 men’s and 17 women’s) from throughout the nation.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Atlanta team wins 5.5 National Invitational Tournament

The 5.5 men's Southern team from Atlanta defeated Middle States 2-1 to win the 2010 5.5 & Open National Invitational Tournament in Las Vegas.
 
The team that plays out of the Midtown Athletic Club overcame four match points against USTA Florida and another in their defeat of Texas. The team that also has won two city championships in the top level of the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Associaiton (ALTA) downed USTA Southern California in the semis.
 
Using the same lineup throughout the event -- Junaid Hossain (singles), Marcus Hurtig/Mark Odgers (#1 doubles), Vanaka Gunawardhana/Brendan Zackey (#2 doubles) -- the team was undefeated. Jesse Lindsley serves as captain.
 
Many team members also play on the 5.0 men's team that also won the USTA League Southern Section Championships.
 
 
 
 
8.0 Mixed finishes fourth
The Mixed team from Memphis, Tenn. finished fourth at the USTA Mixed Doubles National Championship in Tucson, Ariz. Nov. 19-21 at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort.
 
Third place went to the USTA Southwest's Phoenix squad which defeated the USTA Southernteam 2-1 in the consolation match.
