John Isner wins longest match.
The USTA Southern Section is well represented in this year’s Wimbledon Championships. Several of the South’s former top junior players are now competing on the pro circuit, and are playing in the men’s and women’s main draws.

John Isner, who grew up in Greensboro, N.C., finally won what was the longest match in tennis history against Nicholas Mahut of France in the first round. With a final score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68.

The match was called Wednesday at 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 59-59. With every passing minute the seemingly timeless match sets the record for time on court. The final match time was clocked at 11 hours and 5 minutes. The previous match record was 6 hours and 33 minutes. The 138 games in the fifth set eclipses the longest match ever played at Wimbledon of 112 games. Isner will now face Thiemo De Bakker of The Netherlands in the second round.
