Norman Wilkerson Memorial Tournament Returns to Atlanta

Top seed American Lauren Davis beat second-seed Alexis King to win the singles title 2011 Norman Wilkerson Memorial Tournament in Johns Creek, Ga. 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.

With this victory, Davis should see her ranking climb about 25 spots to around No. 360 in the world.

Natalie Pluskota, of Newnan, Ga. and the University of Tennessee, with Alexandra Cercone, defeated the Atlanta duo of Amanda McDowell and Alexandra Hirsch 3-6, 6-3, [10-7].

Other Southern players

Taylor Townsend advanced to the semifinals but fell to King, 6-4, 6-3. Hawley Carter and former NCAA Division I champion amd tjord seed Amanda McDowell, of Atlanta, were quarterfinalists.
 
Background information
The Norman Wilkerson Memorial Tournament is set to return to Atlanta this year, July 11-17, at the Falls of Autry Mill in Johns Creek, Ga.
 
In last year’s event, Georgia Tech junior Irina Falconi defeated Allie Will, of Florida, 6-1, 6-4 in the finals to defend her title. Falconi did not lose a set en route to the championship and earned her fourth career title. .Falconi also reached the doubles final with Maria Sanchez, a former USC player, but the they fell just short losing to Kristy Frilling and Julia Glishko 6-2, 2-6, 10-7.
 
The Norman Wilkerson Memorial Tournament is a $10,000 event with women’s singles and doubles. The singles main draws will consist of 32 players, with a qualifying tournament as well. Singles qualifying begins Saturday, July 9, and the main draw play begins July12. Doubles will consist of a 16-team field and a four team qualifying tournament. Deadlines for entry to event is July 7.
 
The tournament has been played for many years at the Racquet Club of the South in Norcross, Ga. However, with the Atlanta Tennis Championships, an ATP World Tour 250 event, being played the week after, the tournament was moved to the Falls of Autry Mill.
