2013 Champions Crowned in Columbus, Ga.

TEAM COMPETITION DEALS WITH SHORT MATCHES, NUMEROUS DELAYS

Despite three days of rain and repeated delays, USTA Southern crowned 14 champions of the 2013 USTA League 55 & Over/65 & Over Southern Sectional Championships, played in Columbus, Ga. Dec. 6-8.

Rain delayed play on last Friday and Saturday and washed out Sunday competition. Even with using shorten matches and no-ad scoring, some matches finishing after midnight. On Sunday, with unplayable courts and many players set to head home as storms battered the Southeast, 11 of the 14 championships were decided by drawing, as prescribed by tournament procedures. The following championships were decided by competition: Men’s 55s 3.0, Men’s 55s 9.0 combined and Women’s 65s 3.0.

There were 121 men’s and women’s teams with more than 1,100 players competing in NTRP levels: 55s-3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 9.0 combined, and 65s-3.0, 3.5 and 4.0.

South Carolina had five champions and five finalists while North Carolina had two champions and three finalists. Greenville, S.C. came in with two champions and one finalist while Charlotte, N.C. had one champion and two finalists.
