Top competitive male tennis players will have the opportunity to play for a wild card into BB&T Atlanta Open qualifying and compete against some of the best players in the world.

The winner of the BB&T Atlanta Open Wild Card Challenge will move into the 32-player qualifying tournament of the ATP World Tour 250 event, the first tournament of the Emirates Airline US Open Series.

While players of any level can sign up, top college and teaching pros from metro Atlanta are expected to be in the chase. The 2014 winner was Korey Lovett, who began his collegiate career this year at Alabama and was named to the SEC All-Freshman team. Another top local player – Atlanta native Christopher Eubanks of Georgia Tech – made it to last year’s semifinals.

The opening rounds of the challenge will be played June 8-11 at four metro locations. Registration has been extended to Saturday, May 30 at noon. Call Turhan Berne at 678-283-2739 to register.

Here are the facilities for the preliminary rounds:

  • Hudlow Tennis Center
  • Bitsy Grant Tennis Center
  • Lifetime Athletic at Peachtree Corners
  • Sandy Springs Tennis Center

The semifinals and final are scheduled for July 21-22 at 10 a.m. on the tournament’s official courts.

“As a community organization deeply committed to promoting tennis in metro Atlanta, we are again inviting our top local players to test their mettle against our world-class field during the qualifying tournament,” said BB&T Atlanta Open Tournament Director & Chief Development Officer Eddie Gonzalez.

The challenge winner will begin play with the rest of the qualifiers on July 25. Four players survive the three rounds of qualifying and move into the main draw. Qualifiers generally have world rankings between 100 and 500 in the world.
