Coming through qualifying were Atlanta's Donald Young, Jamie Hampton, of Auburn, Ala., and Irini Falconi, who played for Georgia Tech.

Third-round action
John Isner, who hails from Greensboro, N.C., is known for winning long matches after surviving the longest match in tennis history versus Nicolas Mahut in last year's Wimbledon.

But, a 4-hour, 33-minute match just wasn't long enough. Isner lost to Crotia's Marin Cilic 4-6, 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 9-7 in the third round. Isner, the 20th seed, was matched up against 15th seed.

Second-round action
Isner eliminated Radek Stepanek in the second round 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. Isner gained momentum as the match progressed, finishing off the Czech easily in the fourth set.

First-round action
Isner, wo is seeded No. 20, beat France's Florent Serra 6-3, 7-6(10), 6-3 in the first round.

Young has a tough draw and will match up with Marin Cilic, the No. 15 seed. The draw for women's qualifiers has not yet been posted.

Ryan Harrison, who was born in Shreveport, La., lost to France's Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round. Harrison earned a spot in the main draw when he won the USTA Australian Open Wildcard Playoffs by defeating Jack Sock at the Racquet Club of the South, Norcross, Ga., in December.

Melanie Oudin's first-round opponent was Czech Klara Zakopalova. Oudin, of Marietta, Ga., fell to the No. 40 player 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Oudin got a second dose of Zakopalova when she and Carly Gullickson (formerly of Brentwood, Tenn.) faced her and Jamila Groth in the doubles first round. Our Southerners lost 6-1, 6-2.

Hampton lost her first-round match to Great Britain's Elena Baltacha in a tight third set 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Russian Alisa Kleybanova dominated Falconi, winning 6-1, 6-0 in the opening round.
