August 19, 2010 06:05 PM
Burnett Herrick
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) recently announced its selection of Burnett Herrick to represent the United States in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Super Seniors World Team Championships to be held in Turkey, October 11-16, 2010.
This year’s competition will be hosted on the 59 red clay courts of the Ali Bey Club Manavgat tennis resort in Antalya, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea’s Turkish Riviera. The International Tennis Federation annually sponsors this event and all member nations are eligible to field teams. Herrick is one of a four-woman team selected by the USTA from the very top American players in her age division. Her teammates include Mary Boswell, Damascus, MD, Dorothy Matthiessen, Pasadena, CA, and captain, Yvonne (Boots) Van Nostrand of Vero Beach, FL. The American Queen’s Cup team was a finalist in 2009 losing to a strong Australian team on grass courts in Perth, Australia.
The ITF currently ranks Mrs. Herrick seventh in the world in women’s 75 singles. Her USTA national singles ranking is second (behind teammate Matthiessen) and she and Matthiessen presently hold the number one 75’s women’s doubles ranking in the country. This year is Herrick’s third selection to an international cup team. She was a member of the Althea Gibson Cup teams in 2006 and 2007.
Mrs. Herrick lived and worked for many years in New York City, NY, before retiring to Tarboro, NC. She was a busy actor, singer, and dancer with over 50 television commercials and many daytime television parts to her credit. In retirement, Herrick continues her interest in health and physical fitness. In addition to her daily tennis workouts, she adds aerobic and yoga workouts several times a week.
