Adult Competition Committee Releases Player Survey

The USTA Southern Adult Competition Committee conducted a survey in June 2010 to determine the trends in adult league tournament participation.
 
The committee asked over 300 players about their interest, involvement and reaction to playing in adult tournaments, including Age Group and NTRP tournaments throughout the Southern Section.

Highlights from the USTA Adult and Senior Tournament Participation Survey
 
Group A- Respondents who have never played in a USTA sanctioned tournament.
Group B-Respondents who used to play in USTA sanctioned tournaments but have not played in a tournament in the last 5 years.
Group C-Respondents who have played 1 to 5 USTA sanctioned tournaments during the last 5 years.
Group D-Respondents who have played 6 or more USTA sanctioned tournaments during the last 3 years.
 
I. Awareness
• Most of the respondents in all categories were aware that the tournament schedule is on the website but over 80% of the respondents in Group A were unfamiliar with Open/Age and NTRP Tournaments.
• Thirty to 50% of the respondents in Groups B, C, and D were unfamiliar with the Points Per Round System.
II. Publicity
• Over 90% of respondents in Group C and D would like to be reminded of an upcoming tournament with an email.
• Nearly all of the respondents expressed an interest in reading about the results of USTA Southern tennis tournaments.
• Nearly all of the respondents expressed an interest in reading about the winners of the USTA Southern tennis tournaments.
III. Match Format
• PRO-SETS-the overwhelming majority of the respondents were NOT in favor of using pro-sets.
• NO-AD SCORING-The overwhelming majority of the respondents were NOT in favor of using no-ad scoring.
• SUPER TIE BREAKER-The response was mixed in regard to using a super tiebreaker in lieu of a third set. Generally the men (especially the men under the age of 50) and the respondents in Groups C and D were opposed to the idea. Only 36% of all respondents in Group D were in agreement with the idea.
IV. Tournament Format
• The majority of the respondents liked the idea of being guaranteed more than two matches.
• The respondents were neutral with the idea of the tournament beginning on a Friday with the finals played on a Monday rather than for the tournament to begin on a Wednesday or Thursday with the finals played on a Sunday.
• There was overwhelming support from all groups to add a senior division to NTRP tournaments.
• The majority of the respondents would consider playing in a family tennis tournament.
V. Amenities
• Over 73% of the respondents in Groups C and D decide which tournaments to play based on the offered amenities.
• Seventy five % of the respondents in Group C and 67% of the respondents in Group D would not mind paying a higher than average entry fee if the tournament offered nice amenities.
• Reduced priced lodging is very important to all four groups.
• All four groups would be more likely to play if there were more fun and social aspects to the tournaments.
• Sixty one % of the respondents in Group C and 70% of the respondents in Group D would play more tournaments if the tournaments offered prize money. 54% of the respondents in Groups A and B would play more tournaments if prize money were offered.
 
Sixty three% of the respondents in Group A, 76% of Group B, 94% of Group C and 97% of Group D stated they are likely to play a tennis tournament in the future!!!
