Local Leader Liaison

USTA Southern has an opening for a Local Leader Liaison (LLL).

REQUIREMENTS

The LLL candidate must live in one of these four states:

  • Alabama
  • Kentucky
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee

To be clear, USTA Southern is not contracting one LLL per state. There is only one opening.

BACKGROUND

The Local Leader Liaison position was established in 2018. Three LLLs were contracted, one each living in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

DESCRIPTION

This contract position to start in January 2020. This is a stipended, independent contractor position for twelve months, with an opportunity to renew after the first year.

The LLL will coordinate with the USTA Southern office, as well as the USTA state association office in the state they reside, to promote and develop the growth of tennis in a defined community. The overarching objective of the LLL is to enhance the visibility of tennis and the tennis programs in a specific target area by fully understanding the needs of the community to both meet those needs and remove obstacles that inhibit progress.

The ideal LLL is a self-motivated individual who demonstrates a real passion for tennis with a broad knowledge of the goals and priorities of USTA Southern. Contacts within the local community are a must, and the ability to communicate is crucial. This position will entail marketing and promotion, requiring an applicant with the right personality.

The contract will include goals around increasing adult and youth participation in tennis in the community, tournament growth, promoting Net Generation and other aspects of growing tennis. Ultimately, the LLL will be a conduit between the Section, state and local tennis communities, a point person to jointly support local initiatives that strengthen tennis, and an ambassador for the sport of tennis in the local community.

Applicant and community selection will be based on multiple factors, including size of community, existing tennis infrastructure, support of state association, likelihood of success, strength of candidate and other concerns.

COMPENSATION

This position receives a stipend; it is not a full-time salaried position, and there are no health or other benefits associated with the role.

USTA Tennessee Tournaments and Competition Coordinator

Reports To: USTA Tennessee Executive Director

Work Schedule/Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Type: Full Time

Overview:

The primary focus of this position is to increase junior & adult tournaments as well as developing, promoting, supporting current USTA junior & adult events and programming throughout Tennessee, and create new programs of competition that will continue to grow tennis in Tennessee.

Objectives:

Oversee and all junior and adult tournaments in the state of Tennessee
Increase opportunities for entry level players to become exposed to tennis through Youth Progression and “Play F.A.S.T.” programs.
Connect USTA TN tournaments with facilities to the appropriate host facilities.
Promote, develop, and connect fun competitive Net Generation tournaments.
Educate, promote, support, and evaluate the new USTA Junior Competitive Tournament program and the Fast 4 Adult Tournament program.

·Assist Executive Director in creation & oversight of statewide junior & adult tournament budget.
·Offer supplemental training to 10 & Under players through camps, programs, and events for additional exposure, as well as beginner adult training.
·Develop relationships with tennis professionals, facility managers, and tournament directors to promote and build USTA tournaments and special events.
·Organize and execute Tennessee’s Tennis on Campus events

Summary of Responsibilities:

Develop the adult and junior tournament player base throughout the state, including implementation of pilot programs for prospective players.
Establish a working relationship with all colleges in the state to develop a recreational program for students on the College Campus.  Both recreational and competitive.
Locate and develop local volunteers to assist in the implementation of junior and recreational college programs.
Establish and develop a working relationship with tennis professionals, clinicians, coaches and related industry trade associations (i.e. USPTA and PTR) to provide the necessary work force to accomplish all USTA programming goals, including teacher training, school assemblies, carnivals, etc.
Establish and develop a working relationship with Sectional staff to provide training, workshops and clinics, as needed in our state, particularly the TN TSR.
Develop the tournament calendar and the sanctioning and scheduling of the all USTA tournaments in Tennessee.
Check all draw sheet and head tax reports and online draws; contact Tournament Director for any discrepancies- running of “Tournament Tuesday”.
Publish as often as necessary the current Adult and Junior standings, using online ranking system and finalizing year end rankings.
Prepare all materials for the Tournament Directors workshop and Officials certification in cooperation with the Officials Chairman.
Administer Adult Senior Cup and the Southern Junior Cup and travel when possible to support the TN team.
Assist Juniors and Adults in rules and regulations regarding state, sectional and national rankings.
Serve as liaison to the Adult and Junior Tournament committees.
Promote new tournament formats and scoring methods to tournament directors.
Secure sponsors for programs or events when needed.
Coordinate with other states to be aware of programs and best practices.
Perform other duties as assigned by the TTA Executive Director
Serve as the “support” desk for Tournament Directors when needed
Support both Director of Junior and Adult Tennis when they are organizing and running state championships (there are 8 championships in the calendar year)
Support/attend several of the highest level junior and adult tournaments held in Tennessee.
Be responsible for dashboard number that relate to junior and adult tournaments
Learn both tournament operating software (TDM and TMT), be able to train and support tournament directors with the software.
Learn, promote, and educate both parents & providers on the new junior competition structure.

Competencies:

Administrative and organizational skills preferable in tennis related programs.
Effective use of written and oral communication skills, (i.e. written proposals, assistance for Clinician services, banquet speaking, coach’s workshops, Board and committee meetings).
Experience in computer programs and various related skills.
A strong tennis background including playing, coaching, or teaching experience.
Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people including players, coaches and pros, Parents, event organizers, Community Tennis Associations, Facility managers, press, USTA National Staff, STA Sectional Staff, and MTA volunteer’s network.

Exercise discretion in dealing with players and parents, in particular with regard to standings and rankings.
Tennis link and TDM experience is necessary.

Required Education and Experience

·Bachelor degree
·Strong administrative and organizational skills
·Advanced computer skills with MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point
·Team player mentality; ability to work well with others

Preferred Education and Experience

·Tennis background and USPTA/PTR Certification
·Current knowledge of USTA junior programming and tournaments
·Previous experience with running events (tournaments, leagues, play days)
·Working knowledge of TDM

Work Environment and Expected Hours of Work

·Typical schedule spans Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, but will require hours outside of the core business hours.
·This position operates in an office setting, but will also include off-site work overseeing tournaments & events and attending conferences & workshops.

USTA South Carolina Community Coordinator

Location: Columbia
Part Time

To promote and develop the growth of tennis through the creation and expansion of local programs and services. A focus will be given to increase opportunities for adult players and build the capacity of local organizations such as CTAs and parks and recreation departments to operate programs.

Duties and Responsibilities
Adults:
• Create or expand adult programming. Work with Adult League Coordinators and other program directors with City of Columbia and Richland County to support and develop new programming. Promote existing programs.
• Work in conjunction with Community tennis colleagues to identify areas to create new grassroots-playing opportunities in targeted communities in Columbia. Establish a pathway of programs for adults in each community targeted. 
• Work closely with all USTA SC staff to create and execute new programs
• Create a calendar for Social Play opportunities, such as Team-Up Events, Drop-In Series, and Social Leagues
• Work with local providers to host Tennis Apprentice sessions throughout the Midlands for beginner players
• Work with Adult Program Director to help place players on teams in the Midlands
Overall:
• Work closely, as needed, with all departments, employees, volunteers, and partners of the USTA South Carolina
• Monitor income and expenditures within job area to stay within budget
• Assist other staff in major projects or events such as VCO, junior varsity invitationals and other events (with the approval of supervisor)
• Work with Tennis on Campus program manager to help grow TOC base in capital city

Physical Demands
This position requires the ability to be mobile, to be able to stand for some periods of time while off-site and to occasionally lift 10 to 20 pounds. 

Travel 
This position requires travel, included but not limited to tournaments, meetings and workshops with some requirement of overnight travel. This position requires a valid driver’s license.
