Southern Senior Cup 2011

The top adult players from the nine states in the Southern Section met June 2-5 for the 2011 SeSCgillstacynior Cup in Huntsville, Al. The weekend consisted of over 300 players in team competition for men and women’s 35s through 75s with two singles and one doubles match.  The players included former collegiate All-Americans, NCAA champions, and professional players. "This tournament gives players a great opportunity to come out here to have fun, renew old junior and collegiate rivalries, and to prove yourself against the best players from each state," explains Johan Kjellsten, a former NCAA clay court champion, All-American for LSU, and member of Team Louisiana. "I have been coming to this tournament for the last four years, and every year it has grown in size and skill level," says Kjellsten.

The tournament was once again a huge success, with the competition being decided in the last round of matches left on court. In the end,  South Carolina won the Mildred Southern Cup, the Gill Stacy Trophy, and the women’s overall scoring title. Georgia won the men’s overall scoring title and finished a close second in the Mildred Southern Cup.                                            mildredsouternSC

This year, the Senior Cup Diamond Award went to Vicki Everette of North Carolina. The Diamond Award is given as recognition for an individual’s work and commitment to improving the Senior Cup and Southern tennis. As the recipient of the 2008 Charlie B. Morris Award, Everette has been a dedicated contributor and leader in Southern Tennis. Everette has not only been a captain for North Carolina for numerous years, but she also serves as the Senior Cup Tournament Chairman. She oversees the details that help make the tournament one of the favorite tournaments for the players. Everette has tirelessly given her time and effort to helping the tournament and the USTA at all levels. Last year, after leading North Carolina to a Senior Cup victory she reflected on the tournament referring to it as the "Crown Jewel of adult tennis" After all her hard work and effort, Everette is an incredibly deserving recipient of the Diamond Award.

The Senior Cup moved to Huntsville, AL last year after a 17 year run in Columbus, Ga. This will be the third year that this tournament will be hosted at the Huntsville Tennis Center.
