Two USTA Southern Teams Crowned USTA League Adult National Champions

Men’s and Women’s USTA Adult League teams representing USTA Southern made their presence known at the 2012 USTA League Adult National Championships with two teams winning championships.
 
Senior Men's 3.0
The senior men’s tennis team from Lake Charles, La. representing USTA Southern, captured the national title at the USTA League 3.0 Senior National Championships held at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
 
The Lake Charles team defeated a team from San Juan, P.R., 2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Lake Charles team defeated a team from Olympia, Wash., 2-1 in the semifinals. 
 
The team is captained by Daniel Losey and features Steven Lamar Rice, Daniel Lee Allen, Chris Baggett, Lionel Butter, Lloyd L. Calcote, Randall Dean Stout and plays at the Lake Charles Racquet Club.

Senior Men's 9.0
The men’s team from Atlanta, Ga.,representing the USTA Southern Section, captured the national title at the USTA League 9.0 Super Senior National Championships held at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Surprise, Arizona.
 
The Atlanta defeated a team from Laguna Niguel, Calif.   2-1 in the Championship match. Earlier in the day, the Atlanta team defeated a team from Bass River, Mass.    3-0 in the semifinals. They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
 
The team is captained by Hugh Thomson and features Stephen Duffel, Tom Smith, Dale Quigley, Roger Pearce, Marty Pearson, Larry Saheim, Robbin Merriman and plays at the Northeast Georgia Tennis Center.

Senior Men's 7.0
The men’s team from Atlanta, Ga.,representing the USTA Southern Section, finished second at the USTA League 7.0 Super Senior National Championships held at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex in Surprise, Arizona.
The Atlanta team lost to a team from Sun Lakes, Ariz. 2-1 in the Championship match.  Earlier in the day, the Atlanta team defeated a team from Topeka, Kansas 3-0 in the semifinals.  They advanced this far by winning their round-robin flight contested Friday and Saturday.
 
The team is captained by James Meidl and features Neil Fletcher, Russ Gresham, Robert Elliot, Danny Byrne, Gerald Robichaud, James Wahl, Ronald Moss, Terry Downs and All Evans. The team plays at Roswell Area Parks.
 
The top four teams in order of finish are: USTA Southwest (Sun Lakes, Ariz.), USTA Southern (Atlanta, Ga.), USTA Missourri Valley (Topeka, Kan.) and USTA Caribbean (San Juan, P.R.).

Men's 2.5
The Men’s 2.5 team, are captained by Omar Alcaino and hail from just south of Birmingham in Pelham, Ala. They were narrowly defeated 2-1 in the semifinals by the eventual champs out of USTA Caribbean, but rallied to beat USTA Eastern 2-1 in the third place match at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Women's 2.5
The Women’s 2.5 team, captained by Melanie Seger and Amanda Hammack call Germantown, Tenn., a suburban town just east of Memphis, home. They were inched out of the final match by 2nd place USTA Hawaii in the semifinals 2-1, but came back with a vengeance against USTA Midwest in the third place match, winning 3-0 at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Senior Women's 4.0
The women's team out of Fort Smith, Ark. took second place in the 2012 USTA League 4.0 Senior National Championships played at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. The Southern team defeated the Middle States team from Wilmington, Del. 2-1 in the semifinal but fell to Southern California team from Mission Hills 2-1 in the final.

Men's 5.0
The Men’s 5.0 team, captained by Damon Costner out of Atlanta placed fourth, and were defeated by second place USTA Florida 3-0, before falling in a close third place match to USTA Southwest 2-1 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.

Men's 5.5
The Southern team from North Carolina finished second in the USTA League National Invitation Tournament. Midwest defeated the Southern team captained by Derek Gamble from Greensboro, N.C. The team also included: Claes Persson, Mat Rowe, Susheel Narla, Toby Curtis, Dipesh Suranthu Rao, Michael Weidl, Tiago Ruffoni and Tony Mule. This tournament is not considered a USTA League National Championship.

Mixed 2.5
The Mandeville, La. team finished third in the 2012 USTA League 2.5, 7.0, 9.0 Mixed Doubles Championships at the El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort, Tucson, Ariz. The Southern team finished with a 2-3 record but surpassed two other teams with the same record. Mixed 8.0
The Mixed 8.0 team came in fourth at the 2012 USTA League 6.0, 8.0, & 10.0 Mixed National Championships in Hilton El Conquistador Golf & Tennis Resort in Tucson, Ariz. Nov. 18. The Memphis, Tenn. team lost to Southern California 2-1 in the semifinals and Southwest in the third-place match.
