Interviewer Get Interviewed
By Ron Cioffi/USTA Southern
Jessica Armbrust approached the tournament desk and asked, "Can I interview someone involved in the tournament?"
Staff members looked down the table to the championships’ communications person. "Interview him," they said, pointing at me, the director of communications for USTA Southern.
"Of course," I said, "As long as I can interview you."
Armburst opened her notebook and began working on an assignment for her Writing For The Mass Media class at the College of Charleston. She ran down a list of questions: Do you enjoy working at this tournament? What do you enjoy the most?
For the question, "What’s it like to run a tournament like this," I pointed back down the table at Jeff Smith, tournament director and USTA Southern Director of School Tennis, Tennis On Campus and Community Tennis.
One of Armbrust’s goals was to interview her opponents, too. Asked if she’d talk to players after losing to her school, she replied, "I don’t know if they would want me to interview them then."
Her assignment is to write about her observations and interviews from an event. With the first draft due Monday, Armbrust realized it was perfect timing to choose the USTA Tennis On Campus Championships.
"It’s a win/win," she declared.
