Team captain travels more than 1,100 miles to lead team

Beverley Moore never thought about staying home and not traveling the 1,100 miles from Canada to Hilton Head Island for this weekend’s USTA South Carolina 55 and Over State League Championship.

In fact, it was easy decision for Moore, the team captain.

“If you’re the captain, you should make that commitment to come,” she said. “I just believe in that kind of commitment.”

On Tuesday evening, Moore traveled three and half hours from her home north of Toronto to Ottawa. From there, she flew to Newark, New Jersey, and then to Savannah, where a teammate picked her up and drove her to Hilton Head Island.

By about 3 p.m. Wednesday, Moore had made it. She was practicing with her teammates on the clay courts at the South Beach Racquet Club. The club was her team’s home during the spring USTA season, when the “South Beach Babes” went 11-0 in the 3.0 division and qualified for this weekend’s state league championship.

“We have a lot of spirit,” she said.

Moore was on Hilton Head Island during the spring because she and her husband live there from November to about mid-April. For the other six and a half months of the year, they live where they’ve spent much of their lives, about five hours north of Toronto.

Earlier this month, the couple had already returned to Canada for the summer and fall. But even Moore’s husband, John, agreed with her quick return. “Well, she is captain,” he said. “If you win, you go to state… so down she flies.”

If the team continues winning and captures a state league championship this weekend, they can advance to the USTA League 55 & Over Southern Sectional Championships from Sept. 18-20 in Asheville, North Carolina.

They also would give their captain another reason to come play tennis with some of her best friends during a USTA league championship.

“We have a lot of spirit and we hope to win a state championship,” Beverley Moore said. “We have an amazing team.”
