Southerns Look For US Open Success

USTA Southern is well represented at the 2013 US Open with 16 players who grew up or live in our nine states playing in men's and women's singles and doubles, plus mixed doubles. 
 
Round of 16 singles
  • Alison Riske lost to Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.
Third-round singles
  • In a highly anticipated match between two accomplished but young American women, Jamie Hampton lost to Sloane Stephens 6-1, 6-3.
  • Alison Riske surprisingly knocked out the seventh-seed and former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 6-3, 6-0. 
  • John Isner, seeded No. 13, lost to German Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(5).
 Second-round singles
  • Jamie Hampton's defeated Kristina Mladenovic of France 7-5, 6-4.
  • John Isner bounced Frenchman Gael Monfis  7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(4).
  • Donald Young fell to Florian Mayer 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
  • Alison Riske eliminated 28th-seed Mona Barthel 6-4, 6-2.
  • Kaitlyn McCarthy lost to the second-seed Ana Konjuh 6-3, 7-5 in the second round.
Second-round doubles
  • Ryan Harrison and Robert Lindstedt of Sweden will face Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray, the twelve seeds.
  • Brian Baker and Rajeev Ram take on the seventh-seeded Julien Benneteau and Nenad Zimonjic.
  • Melanie Oudin and Alison Riske will play against Liezel Huber and Nuria Llogostera Vives, the ninth seeds.
First-round singles
  • John Isner, seeded No. 13, took it to Italian Filippo Volandri, winning 6-0, 6-2, 6-3. 
  • Jamie Hampton, seeded No. 23, dominated Lara Arruabarrena 6-4, 6-2.
  • Shelby Rogers lost to Caroline Garcia of France 6-3, 6-2.
  • Grace Min, who came through qualifying, but fell to Karin Knapp 6-3, 6-1.
  • Mallory Burdette lost to 2004 US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 7-5.
  • Alison Riske won eaily over Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3, 6-3.
  • Brian Baker fell to Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
  • Donald Young advanced through qualifying and totally dominated Martin Klizan 6-1, 6-0, 6-1.
  • Rhyne Williams battled for five sets but lost to former No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 7-5, 6-0.
  • Ryan Harrison didn’t make much progress against the second-seeded Rafael Nadal and fell 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
  • Kaitlyn McCarthy defeated Fiona Ferro 5-7, 7-6 (6), 6-2.
  • Chloe Ouellet-Pizer fell to Katy Dunne 6-3, 6-1.
 First-round doubles, including mixed
  • Ryan Harrison and Robert Lindstedt of Sweden needed two long tiebreaks to defeat Americans Steve Johnson and Michael Russell 7-6(6), 7-6(8).
  • Reigning NCAA doubles champions Jamere Jenkins and Mac Styslinger lost to Michael Llodra and Nicolas Mahut 6-3, 6-2.
  • Bobby Reynolds and Alex Kuznetsov lost to Germans Andre Begemann and Martin Emmrich 6-4, 6-2.
  • Brian Baker and Rajeev Ram downed Paul C. Oosterbaan and Ronnie Schneider 6-0, 6-4.
  • Shelby Rogers and Maria Sanchez lost to Bertens and Johanna Larsson 7-5, 6-4.
  • Melanie Oudin and Alison Riske defeated Grace Min and Lauren Davis 6-2, 6-4.
  • Mallory Burdette and Taylor Townsend fell to Alize Cornet and Caroline Garcia 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
  • Nicholas Monroe and Simon Stadler lost to tenth-seeded Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo 7-6(2), 6-4.
  • Melanie Oudin and former Texas A&M star Austin Krajicek lost to Anabel Medina Garrigues and Bruno Boares 7-5, 6-2. Oudin won the US Open mixed doubles crown with Jack Sock in 2011. 
  • Jarmere Jenkins and Californian Sabrina Santamaria were defeated by the French team of Alize Cornet and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-1.
  • Donald Young and Victoria Duval lost to Raquel Kops-Jones and Treat Huey 2-6, 6-4, [10-6].

  • Brian Baker was born, grew up and lives in Nashville, Tenn.
  • Mallory Burdette is from Jackson, Ga.
  • Jamie Hampton is a long-time resident of Auburn, Ala. She is the third highest-ranked American woman at No. 25 in the world.
  • Ryan Harrison was born in Shreveport, La.
  • John Isner was born and raised in Greensboro, N.C. He is the highest-ranked American man, at No. 17 in the world.
  • Jamere Jenkins grew up and lives in College Park, Ga.
  • Kaitlyn McCarthy lives in Cary, N.C.
  • Grace Min grew up in Lawrenceville and Norcross, Ga.
  • Nicholas Monroe lives in Chapel Hill, N.C.
