INDIAN WELLS, CALIF. – It was a weekend to remember for the Southern California Section women’s team from Monarch Beach, Calif., as it defeated the Intermountain Section team from Greenwood Village, Colo., 2-1, to win the USTA League Adult 18 and Over 5.0 National Championships.

On a warm, sunny day at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, the Southern California sister team of Julie Shapiro and Jennifer Lyons won the deciding match, defeating Intermountain’s Molly Carter and Rhona Kaczmarczyk in No. 2 doubles, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch the championship.

“It feels great. They had a tough fight, and they played hard. Standing around watching the deciding match was pretty exciting,” said team captain Krista O’Connor. “They (Carter and Lyons) lost a parent recently and have been pretty sad. To come and have such a fun experience and so positive and win together was awesome for all of us. It was a great time.”

Earlier in the day, the Southern California Section women’s team got past the Texas Section team from Houston, 2-1, in a semifinal match. The Intermountain Section team scored a narrow 2-1 decision over the Pacific Northwest Section women from Seattle to advance to the final.

Southern Hospitality Reigns Supreme in Men’s 5.0 Final

It was an all-Southern men’s final at the USTA League Adult 18 and Over 5.0 National Championships, as the Southern Section team from Charlotte, N.C., scored a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Southern Section wild card team from Myrtle Beach, S.C.

"It’s great. We’ve worked for several months for this," said team captain Tommy Beecher. "Everyone is really excited. I’m really proud of my guys for playing as well as they did. The tennis is great, of course, but the camaraderie we built on and off the court as teammates, it was good with those guys.”

The men’s final at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden was a rematch of the Southern Sectional finals played in Auburn, Ala., in July in which the Charlotte team also prevailed, 2-1.

“We know all those guys. We’ve played them a lot. They’re great players,” Beecher said. “We sneaked by them in Sectionals, and we sneaked by them today. It’s a testament on how good Southern tennis is.”

Earlier in the day, the Charlotte team defeated an Intermountain Section team from Denver, 2-1, to reach the final. The Myrtle Beach team edged a Northern Section team from Minneapolis, 2-1, to advance to the championship.
