Savannah Area Tennis Association Named 2013 National Community Tennis Association Of The Year

September 9, 2013 06:36 AM

The USTA today announced that the Savannah Area Tennis Association has been selected as the 2013 Community Tennis Association of the Year. The group was recognized recently at the US Open and will be officially honored during the annual USTA Community Tennis Development Workshop, held Oct. 31-Nov. 3 at the Sheraton Denver Downtown in Denver.

The Savannah Area Tennis Association this past year celebrated 25 years of service to the community. It was officially formed in 1986, according to Leslie Shields, Community Tennis Director of the Savannah Area Tennis Association.

“We not only promote the growth of tennis in Savannah, but we are also aware of the health issues that come from leading a sedentary lifestyle.” Shields said. “We believe that tennis is the sport of a lifetime and can combat health issues that arise when you do not lead an active lifestyle.”

Shields credited the work of the Savannah CTA’s many volunteers and the one paid employee, Phyllis Green, the group’s Community Tennis Coordinator. Chantal Considine serves as the organization’s current President.

“Every single league that the USTA runs, we offer,” Shields said. “We have also hosted the USTA Georgia State Championships age-group 55- and 65-and-over senior tournament held for the past 10 years each October at the Landings Club.

“We are just thrilled to receive this award,” Shields continued. “From our schools program to wheelchair tennis, we have continued to provide tennis opportunities to the residents of Savannah and will continue to do so.”

“The Savannah Area Tennis Association has been an excellent model for other CTAs across the nation,” said Kurt Kamperman, USTA Chief Executive of Community Tennis. “Their commitment to using tennis as a vehicle to impact youth in their community has had a positive effect on thousands. We are proud to honor the organization’s leaders and many volunteers with the 2013 Community Tennis Association of the Year Award.”

The USTA CTA of the Year Award was established in 2002 to honor a CTA for outstanding service rendered in growing and developing the sport of tennis in its community. The award recipient is selected from 17 nominees, one from each of the USTA sections, by a panel of USTA Community Tennis Association Development Committee members.
