Hispanic Heritage Month Draws Crowds to Southern Events

The country's fastest growing minority group celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15-Oct. 15. During this month, America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Six locations in USTA Southern hosted Hispanic

  • Hispanic Family Tennis, Frankfort, Ky.
  • LatinFest, Canton, Miss. 
  • TennisWorks! in the Parks, hosted by CORTA, Columbus, Ga. 
  • Jones Elementary School Play Day; Rogers, Ark.
  • Kids Tennis Club at Cristo Rey Church, hosted by the Lexington Area Tennis Association, Columbia, S.C.
  • Tenis Para Todos; Coleman Community Center, Nashville, Tenn.

National Hispanic Heritage Month was created via Presidential proclamation in order to recognize and explore the achievements of a people that have contributed so much to American culture. The observation was initiated in 1968 as National Hispanic Heritage Week but was expanded in 1988 to include the entire 31-day period.

USTA Southern is proud to honor our dedicated group of fine coaches, players, parents and volunteers of all background who bring tremendous value, insight and richness to the USTA family and the sport of tennis. 

  • 1 out of every 6 persons living in the United States is of Hispanic origin.
  • The median age for Hispanics is 27 compared to the general population's median age of 37.
  • 65% of Hispanics living in the U.S. are of Mexican origin.
  • Hispanics own more businesses than any other minority group. There are 1.6 million Hispanic-owned businesses, which generate $200 billion in revenue.
  • Nearly 30 million Hispanics are online.
  • Hispanic buying power rose to $1.3 trillion dollars in 2015.
