Getting to know... UNC senior Caroline Price

March 20, 2015 07:45 AM

By Sally Milano, USTA.com

UNC senior Caroline Price has shown her prowess on the court, but we wanted to find out more about what makes her tick when she's away from competition. Check out some fun facts about the talented senior below.

USTA.com: Who is your favorite tennis player?

Caroline Price: One of my really good friends is Vicky Duval, so I’m supporting her because I want to see her do really well. I date Kevin King, so obviously on the men’s side, I’m trying to cheer him on and support him. He’s right now in the Futures and the Challengers, so he’s trying to make it, so the two people I really follow in tennis are Vicky and Kevin. And Nadal is probably my all-time favorite because he’s a lefty and I’m a lefty. I love the way he plays and to watch him play.

USTA.com: Do you have a nickname?

Caroline Price: My teammates call me "CP." My Twitter name and my Instagram name is "C_pricey" – so a lot of people around campus call me CPricey or CP.

USTA.com: What's your best shot?

Caroline Price: My serve. I definitely think that being tall and being a lefty, my serve is a big advantage.

USTA.com: Favorite surface?

Caroline Price: If you’d have asked me that in juniors, I’d have said clay. But we don’t really play on clay in college tennis, so I’d say I like outdoor hard.

USTA.com: How old were you when you started playing tennis?

Caroline Price: Eight or 9 years old. I was outside in the backyard just messing around. I wouldn’t say I really started playing seriously till I was maybe about 14, but I was on little kids’ teams when I was 12. I was playing sports because I grew up in a basketball family (Caroline is the daughter of former NBA All-Star Mark Price), so I was always involved in sports, but I didn’t really decide on what I wanted to specialize in until eighth grade. I also played volleyball very competitively until high school. I played on a club volleyball team where I traveled, so I was doing that with tennis and volleyball, and then eventually my dad sat me down and was like, "You could be good at those sports, but if you want to try to be great, you’ve got to pick one." It was a really hard decision for me, and that was when I decided to be serious about tennis, probably around eighth grade or my freshman year.

USTA.com: What's your favorite movie?

Caroline Price: "The Blind Side."

USTA.com: Favorite actor/actress?

Caroline Price: Sandra Bullock.

USTA.com: Who is your favorite singer or band?

Caroline Price: I love music. I don’t know if I’d be able to tell you my favorite, but I create the playlist for our matches. I’d say my favorite band overall if I have to pick one would be Need To Breathe, but I listen to anything and everything.

USTA.com: What's your favorite TV show?

Caroline Price: My teammates and I watch some shows together. Recently we were watching "The Bachelor." I would say I really like "The Mindy Project." I think she [Mindy Kaling] is hilarious.

USTA.com: Your favorite food is...?

Caroline Price: Chick-Fil-A is my favorite place. I’m a tea-aholic. I have to have sweet tea every single day, or hot tea or something like that. And if I had to have a food, I’d have a chicken biscuit every day.

USTA.com: Favorite sports team?

Caroline Price: Charlotte Hornets. I’m actually taking my team to a game over spring break. My dad is one of the coaches, so I’m a little biased. My dad played in the NBA for 12 years. He played at Georgia Tech in college. He played most of his career for the Cavaliers in Cleveland, but he also played for Orlando, for Golden State, for the Wizards. He was on the Dream Team II. He’s my hero, and he excelled at his sport, so that’s obviously very helpful for me because I’m trying to excel at mine. He helps me a lot with my tennis.

USTA.com: What's your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

Caroline Price: I love to shop. I’m a big shopper.

USTA.com: How about your favorite tennis memory?

Caroline Price: I have a lot. I’d say winning [USTA/ITA National] Indoors was a big memory. I really enjoyed playing in the junior US Open my junior year of high school. It was just really neat to be around the pro players and be around that environment. I think that’s what really encouraged me in tennis. It really motivated me to keep going because just being around that environment and getting to play there was really neat.
