Dothan, AL – The Georgia team captured the USTA Southern Section Campus Championship title Sunday afternoon with a victory over LSU at the Westgate Tennis Center. In the third place match, North Carolina State defeated Clemson. All four teams will receive an automatic bid to the USTA National Championship to be held in Cary, NC in April.
LSU looked to be the underdog of the field but made a strong showing on the first day when they defeated the defending champions Georgia Tech. The victory sealed their fate in the top four and the automatic bid to Nationals. Sunday’s action was just as difficult for the Tigers as they knocked off a tough Clemson team before falling to the Bulldogs.
Meanwhile, Georgia reclaims the title they won in 2006. The road to the championship was not an easy one. They had to claim victories over both NC State and Clemson at some point in the bracket before reaching the finale.
This year’s 4th annual Southern Campus Championships drew 24 teams from 20 colleges and universities throughout the section’s nine states. The event is growing significantly since its inaugural year when just seven teams from six schools competed.
The USTA Southern Campus Championships are administered by the USTA, USTA Southern and World Team Tennis. This partnership has not only resulted in record participation at section championships, but also in growing interest and participation and intramural tennis on college campuses throughout the section.
