Former President Barbara Brewer Passes

Barbara Brewer leads the USTA Southern Annual Meeting.

Barbara Brewer, who served as USTA Southern President for the 2001-02 term, has passed away.

Brewer, of Charleston, S.C., also served as Executive Vice President, Vice President, Secretary, Delegate-at-Large, Collegiate Chairman, District Presidents Chairman and Southern Closed 18s Championship Tournament Director. She had been a USTA lifetime member for more than 22 years.

On a National level, she served as USA Team Tennis Committee Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the USTA Collegiate Committee, along with membership on the High Performance Study Group, Strategic Planning, Play for Growth and Ad Hoc Section/State Delivery Enhancement Committees.

Brewer started her tennis career at the age of 12 by hitting against a garage door and had been committed to the game throughout her life. For over twenty years, she has devoted countless hours volunteering and has been involved in every levels of the USTA. Through the years, she has worked selflessly on the State, Sectional and National level giving back to the game she loved.

To recognize her tireless efforts, the USTA Southern Section presented her with the 2006 Charlie B. Morris Jr. Service Award. The Charlie B. Morris Jr. Service Award is presented in memory of Charlie Morris to the volunteer who best exhibits exemplary volunteer spirit at the local, state, sectional and/or national levels. She also was the recipient of the Jacobs Bowl in 2002. The awards are considered the highest honors bestowed by USTA Southern. She also was honored with the 1996 Junior Tournament of the Year and 1992 Family of the Year Awards.

While living in Arkansas, Brewer served as USTA Arkansas President from 1993-94. Other posts she served in the state include Tennis Hall of Fame, Ranking and Fundraising Chairman; Tennis Patrons Foundation Trustee and Men's Pro Satellite Tournament Director. Her service in Arkansas began in 1987 and last for 12 years. Brewer was recognized with the Arkansas President's Award, Volunteer Service Award twice and the Family of the Year Award.

Services are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 13, at First Scots Presbyterian Church, in Charleston, at 11 a.m.
