Final four 2013 champions crowned in Surprise

New champions were crowned at the USTA League Adult 55 & Over 7.0/9.0 National Championships.

The final four champions of the 2013 USTA League season were crowned Sunday at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex in Surprise, Ariz., in the 55 & Over 7.0 and 9.0 National Championships.

In the men’s 7.0 championships, the team from Cerritos, Calif., defeated a team from San Juan, P.R., 3-0, in the title match. Earlier in the day, the Cerritos team defeated a squad from Long Island, N.Y., 3-0, in the semifinals. Cerritos is captained by Reynaldo Tacsuan and features Pacifico Bracero Bontuyan, Gerardo Cabrera Palma, Luis Basualdo, Alex Buala, Mark Gross, Benjamin Bautista, Rudy Basilan, Randy Chinn. The team plays at the Cerritos Tennis Center.

The men’s 9.0 championship was claimed by the Dallas squad, representing the USTA Texas Section. The Dallas team defeated a team from Millbrae, Calif., 2-1, in the final and beat a team from Eagan, Minn., 2-1, in the semifinals. The team is captained by Bill Braswell and features Peter Neufeld, Steve Franklin, Roger Sargent, KC Miller, Jim Hansen, Warren Gradick, Steve Canan. They play at the High Pointe Tennis Center.

The women’s 7.0 title was won by the USTA Southern team from Charleston, S.C., which defeated a team from Hopewell, N.J., 3-0, in the final. Earlier in the day, Charleston knocked out Austin, Texas, 2-1, in the semifinals. Charleston is captained by Elisabeth Pickelsimer and Beth Renken and features Lynda Wall, Anya Park, Carol Poole, Mary Ann Borysowicz, Debbie Sisco, Joy MacLean, Karen Farrell. The team plays at the Charleston Tennis Center.

Another California team, this one from San Diego, representing USTA Southern California, captured the national title in the 9.0 National Championships, defeating Fairfax, Va., 3-0, for the title. Earlier in the day, San Diego defeated Houston, 3-0, in the semifinals. San Diego is captained by Masako Beppu and features Jennifer Anderson, Ruth Young, Linda Bray, Catherine Anderson, Liane Bryson, Sue Sprague, Fran White. They play at the Balboa Tennis Club.

The USTA League Adult 55 & Over division is for men and women 55 years of age and older. Teams are formed by combining the two players' individual National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) ratings. The team’s total rating must equal: 6.0, 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0. The total NTRP rating cannot exceed the level of the team. For example, a 7.0 team could be a combination of two 3.5 players, or one 4.0 partner and one 3.0 partner. Play format consists of three doubles matches.

Established in 1980, USTA League has grown from 13,000 participants in a few parts of the country in its first year to more than 820,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.
