Southern players and organizations are constantly making their mark in the world of tennis. Here's a list of recent awards, achievements and news in January 2012.
 
Southerners to play in ITF Seniors World Team Championships
The USTA today announced the 40 players -- include four Southern women -- who will represent the United States at the 32nd ITF Seniors World Team Championships, which is the senior tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup and Fed Cup competitions. The 40 American athletes will be among 1,000 players from 35 countries participating at seven venues across San Diego, Calif., from February 5-11.
 
The United States team will be defending its championships in five of the ten age divisions. The titles the U.S. team will be defending are the Young Cup, Margaret Court Cup, Maria Esther Bueno Cup, Maureen Connolly Cup, and Fred Perry Cup.
 
Following the ITF Seniors World Team Championships, the World Individual Championships will take place from February 12-19. The World Team and Individual Championships will be held at the following locations: Balboa Tennis Club, La Jolla Tennis Club, Barnes Tennis Center, La Costa Resort & Spa, Morgan Run Club & Resort, La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, and San Diego Tennis & Racquet Club.
 
Below is a list of Southern players representing the U.S. and the USTA at the 2012 ITF Seniors World Team Championships:
 
Women’s 35, Suzanne Lenglen Cup
Carolina Blouin, Raleigh, NC
 
Women’s 45, Margaret Court Cup
Mariana Hollman, Winston-Salem, NC
 
Women’s 50, Maria Esther Bueno Cup
Fran Chandler, Jackson, TN, Captain
 
Women’s 55, Maureen Connolly Cup
Diane Barker, Daniel Island, SC
 
Min takes $25,000 tournament
Norcross, Ga.'s Grace Min defeated sedond-seed Gail Brodsky 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 to win the $25,000 Ace Sports Group Tennis Classic.
 
Min started as a qualifer and also downed the sixth seed Catalina Castano 6-1, 6-1 and American Lauren Davis 7-6(7) 6-2 in the semis. Ranked only No. 352 in the world, Min had one of her best pro tournaments at the event in Innisbrook, Fla.
 
Min holds the US Open girls' singles and Wimbledon girls' doubles titles.
 
USTA Serves awards more than $1.5 million in grants and schlorships in 2011
USTA Serves, the National Charitable Foundation of the United States Tennis Association, announced today that it has granted 41 community tennis and education organizations in the U.S. more than $400,000 in grants. Combined with scholarship awards, USTA Serves distributed more than $1.5 million in 2011.
 
Four Southern programs received year-end grants:
  • Battlefield Community Tennis Association, Jackson, Miss.
  • Crosscourt Tennis, Nashville, Tenn.
  • MACH Academy, Inc., Augusta, Ga.
  • YMCA of Metropolitan Atlanta
