October 31, 2003 01:21 PM

A women’s team from Ridgeland, MS, in their bid to capture the USTA Southern Section's third national title, were forced to settle for second place as they lost to a team from California in the finals of the USA League Tennis presented by Lincoln 3.5 Senior National Championships. The championship was held at the Radisson Resort & Spa in Scottsdale, AZ.

Ridgeland lost to a team from Fountain Valley, CA by a combined team score of two to one in the championship match. Earlier in the day they defeated a team from Tucson, AZ, two to one in the semifinals. They advanced to the final four by winning their round-robin flight earlier in the competition.

The team is captained by Jane Holland and team members include: Peggy Carman, Jill Fitzgerald, Virginia Foreman, Faye Hudson, Ola Kuriger, Mary Ann O'Brien, Cindy Peoples, Meme Potter, Jimmie Savell, Linda Trunzler, Toni Williams and Sue Yarbro.

This year’s USA League Tennis 3.5 Senior National Championships have drawn the top 34 teams (17 women’s and 17 men’s) from throughout the United States.

USA League Tennis presented by Lincoln is the world’s largest recreational tennis league with more than 500,000 participants throughout the country. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the United States Tennis Association through its 17 sectional associations. The league groups players by ability using six National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) levels, from 2.5 (beginner) to 5.0 (advanced). Players progress through a series of championships at the area and sectional levels culminating with the national championships. USA League Tennis is open to any USTA member age 19 and older. The league provides players with the opportunity to improve their skills, have fun, meet other players, travel throughout the country and compete in a USTA national championship.

Lincoln is the presenting sponsor and official vehicle of USA League Tennis. Penn Racquet Sports, the world’s leading manufacturer of tennis balls, is in its 16th year as the official ball of USA League Tennis. The Citizen Watch Company celebrates its eighth year as a USTA Corporate Champion and as sponsor of USA League Tennis.
