October 27, 2003 12:12 PM

The men’s team from Shreveport, LA captured third place at the USA League Tennis presented by Lincoln 4.5 Senior National Championships held at the Riviera Resort & Racquet Club and Moore Tennis Academy.

Shreveport, LA, lost to a team from Kansas City, MO, (2-1) in the semifinals, but later in the day they defeated a team from Seattle (2-1) to grab the third place finish. They advanced to the final four by winning their round-robin flight contested earlier in the competition.

The team is captained by Richard Verzaal and team members include: Bill Borders, Lance Dreyer, Jorge Jiminez, Andy Lloyd and Walter Paz (photo below).

This year’s USA League Tennis 4.5 Senior National Championships have drawn the top 32 teams (16 women’s and 16 men’s) from throughout the United States.

USA League Tennis presented by Lincoln is the world’s largest recreational tennis league with more than 500,000 participants throughout the country. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the United States Tennis Association through its 17 sectional associations. The league groups players by ability using six National Tennis Rating Program (NTRP) levels, from 2.5 (beginner) to 5.0 (advanced). Players progress through a series of championships at the area and sectional levels culminating with the national championships. USA League Tennis is open to any USTA member age 19 and older. The league provides players with the opportunity to improve their skills, have fun, meet other players, travel throughout the country and compete in a USTA national championship.

Lincoln is the presenting sponsor and official vehicle of USA League Tennis. Penn Racquet Sports, the world’s leading manufacturer of tennis balls, is in its 16th year as the official ball of USA League Tennis. The Citizen Watch Company celebrates its eighth year as a USTA Corporate Champion and as sponsor of USA League Tennis.
