Team of the Week for 9-23-02: Anderson, SC 3.0 Women

Ok, so the members of the "Dream Team" from Cardinal Racquet Club in Anderson, South Carolina probably can't dunk a basketball, but they sure can play tennis! You see, up until this year, the Cardinal Racquet Club had two women's 3.0 teams. Now they only have one.

The captains of the two teams, Martha Blanton and Leah Watson, got together and decided to become one, and in their first year of competition, the combined team won the Southern Sectional Championships! "The members of both teams agreed to merge, and great things happened. Combining the two teams created a strong team with depth," Blanton says. Strong indeed, as their next stop is the USA League Tennis National Championships in Tucson, Arizona at the end of September.

The team's final match at the Sectional Championships was tight, but they managed to pull out a 3-2 victory over the team from Pelham, Alabama. "We were all cheering with every point won! We could not believe that we were headed to Nationals!" Amazingly, this Cardinal team is the first from the club to advance past Sectionals.

More amazing, however, is the fact that the team has two members who are fighting breast cancer. The team has devoted their season to breast cancer awareness, wearing pink ribbons, pins, and even painting their racquet strings with a ribbon-shaped stencil to advocate the cause.

By combining the talents of the two teams, the Cardinal team is tough to beat in terms of depth. With over 20 members, the team of Susan Anderson, Susan Alewine-Willis, Chasse Bailey-Dorton, Linda Byrd, Maria Cayelli, Loretta Davidson, Donetta Dodwell, Brenda Glenn, Karen Hagner, Nancy Johnson, Vicki Johnson, Ravinder Malik, Valerie Mattingly, Linda McFall, Felice Moody, Chris Richardson, Donna Shearer, Carol Whiten, Vickie Whitman, Blanton and Watson, probably has one of the largest talent pools to draw from in all of USA League Tennis! At the National Championships, the Cardinal team will be out to prove that in tennis, bigger is definitely better!
