SATA Expands Work In Schools

February 23, 2010 04:33 PM

 Savannah Area Tennis Association
For years the Savannah Area Tennis Association (SATA )has organized programs in public and private schools throughout its community in Georgia, both in school and after school.  This year, however, SATA has become a key player in a network of community organizations dedicated to increasing the recreational opportunities of underserved school children through the healthy sport of tennis.  This past summer an “after school initiative” was launched with the intention of greatly expanding after school tennis programming with the intention of impacting children through raising issues of healthy lifestyle choices, sportsmanship, and character development – using tennis as a vehicle.

SATA has participated in two meetings and several conference calls with Mayor Johnson, the Chatham County School District Personnel, the USTA and USTA Southern, the Coastal Area YMCA, the Georgia After School Initiative, Healthy Savannah, and other community partners.  A strategy to bring this important programming to the children of Savannah has been set in motion.

To advance this work a Recreational Coaches Workshop to train staff and volunteers was held on Jan. 9, 2010, with 29 people in attendance.  SATA organized this important workshop, which was led by USTA Coach Rick Grisham from the Atlanta area.  The attendees will now be a critical force, able to deliver important recreational tennis programming that will hopefully encourage children to choose an active, healthy lifestyle.  SATA has already begun to deliver 6 week after school programs to three elementary schools.  As you can see from the picture of the students at Bartow Elementary, the program is a big hit!
