Southern's Girls' 18s Team Wins National Crown

August 10, 2009 05:26 PM

Seven of USTA Southern's top Girls' 18s junior players slid past USTA Texas to win the 2009 USTA Girls' 18s National Team Championship.

Coached by Tony Minnis, women's coach of LSU, the team won the final in Novato, Calif. 5-4. Team members were Alexandra Anghelescu, Alexandra Clay, Allison Falkin, Kate Fuller, Lauren Herring, Grace Min and Caroline Price.

Minnis said, "I think this team really showed a lot of spirit and chemistry. In such a short period of time, they bonded and came together as a quality team that performed well in tough situations. They were so unified. It was an honer and pleasure to coach them."

The coach pointed out three matches that were key junctures in keeping USTA Southern in the tournament: Min and Herring coming back from 5-6 to win their match over USTA Southern California 8-6 in the semis, Price rebounded from 1-2,-0-40 to win the clinching match against Southern California 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and Clay down a set point to beat Texas 7-6, 6-3 in the final.
