Tennys Sandgren had a tournament to remember when he advanced to the third round of the French Open Juniors Championships and also had two practices with the world’s top player Rafael Nadal.
Thirteenth seed Sandgren of Gallatin, Tenn. defeated Stanislav Poplavskyy of Ukraine 6-0, 6-3 and Croatian Marin Draganja 6-2, 6-3. Sandgren eventually lost a hard-fought battle against Richard Becker of Germany 4-6, 3-6. Sandgren and doubles partner Julen Uriguen of Guatemala lost a close third-set tiebreak match to Croatians Dino Marcan and Marin Draganja 7-5, 4-6, 7-10. In between matches, Sandgren was given the incredible opportunity to practice with Nadal twice, which was an experience the seventeen-year old will remember for the rest of his tennis career.
Recently crowned NCAA singles champion Devin Britton of Jackson, Tenn. lost in the first round to 11th seeded Frenchman Gianni Mina 0-6, 4-6. Jordon Cox of Duluth, Ga. also lost in the first round to Argentinean Renzo Olivo 3-6, 3-6. In the Boys’ doubles, Britton and Cox partnered together and advanced to the third round after pulling off a huge upset against the number one seeded team of Andrea Collarini and Agustin Velotti of Argentina 6-2, 5-7, 10-5. In the third round they were defeated in a close third-set match by Radim Urbanek of the Czech Republic and Patrk Brydolf of Sweden 6-2, 2-6, 8-10.
Mallory Burdette of Jackson, Ga. was defeated in the first round by Russian Daria Gavrilova 3-6, 4-6. Garvrilova advanced to the finals of the singles competition. Burdette and her partner, Quirine Lemoine of the Netherlands lost in the first round to Timea Babos of Honduras and Heather Watson of Great Britain 4-6, 5-7.
