Team Championships a Dream Come True for Bryan Brothers

December 10, 2007 02:48 PM

The Bryan Brothers made a dream come true when they clinched the Davis Cup title for the United States after a straight set win over their Russian foes. The pair relished their team victory and went on to talk about the incredible experience of playing tennis as a team.

“I just feel like it was an incredible goal of the team,” said Bob Bryan. “We had great teams, but it comes down to a little bit of luck with the home matches and surface and balls and fans. I feel extremely lucky to have had a chance to play a home tie in a final. I still can’t really describe how it feels…it’s been a whirlwind since we won.”

At 13-1, the Bryans are now just one victory short of matching John McEnroe and Peter Fleming for the all-time U.S. combined doubles record. With no intention of ever leaving the team, the twins will get their first shot when the U.S. travels to Vienna, Austria in February for the 2008 first round.

“We’re definitely lifers,” said Bob Bryan. “I feel like in Davis Cup its doubles’ biggest stage, so why wouldn’t we want to be out here playing for our country. It’s the most fun we have in tennis, period. We’re going to be out here for this team forever, I think.”

The Bryan Brothers have made a career out of being doubles specialists and now hold the world No. 1 ranking in doubles play. As advocates of doubles and team tennis, the Bryans serve as the National Spokespersons for USTA Jr. Team Tennis.

“We grew up playing tennis together as a team,” said Bob Bryan. “USTA Jr. Team Tennis is a great way to excite young people about the game and to teach them how fun it is to play with a group.”

“Sharing the excitement and social benefits of tennis with others is one of my favorite aspects of the sport,” said Mike Bryan. “Bob and I are thrilled to lend our support to the USTA Jr. Team Tennis program and the USTA, which does a great job of bringing more young people into the game.”

“USTA Jr. Team Tennis is a wonderful way to introduce young people to the fun, social benefits of tennis,” said Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. “The Bryan brothers are wonderful role models on and off the court, and we’re proud to have their support.”
