To help commemorate the legacy of humanitarian and tennis great Arthur Ashe, USTA/NJTL sponsors an annual essay contest – open only to USTA/NJTL participants – asking entrants to answer, in 300 words or less, “Why is Arthur Ashe a legend?” The USTA Southern Section is committed to involving as many juniors as possible with the unique and exciting experience that is Arthur Ashe Kids Day.
Last year USTA Southern Section sponsored eight additional juniors from our states to take the trip of a lifetime to the Big Apple. Essay contest winners and their chaperone were treated to four nights and three action packed days in New York City. Winners attended the Arthur Ashe Kids Day festivities where they were entertained by performers such as Ne-Yo and the Cheetah Girls. Tennis Legends, Steffi Graf and Andre A
gassi, participated in on-court exhibitions where they took on the tennis stars such as Andy Roddick and James Blake. Winners and their chaperones were also given tickets to the opening day of the US Open. Other excursions included a double decker bus tour of New York City, dinner at Planet Hollywood and a stop at one of New York's most famous pizzerias.
The 2007 Arthur Ashe Essay Contest is now open. In addition to the ten national winners the USTA Southern will again sponsor eight additional applicants to participate in the New York festivities.
