Georgia Champs at the Champions Club!

September 17, 2006 10:18 AM

The USTA Bullfrog Southern Team Championships came to a close Sunday as Team Georgia was crowned winners of the Gold Division. Every state brought the 'best of the best' to compete, but they were no match for Team Georgia who pulled off their 13th consecutive win!

Team Georgia

Players competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles throughout the 3-day competition to claim their titles. Teams were made up of the top 14, 16 and 18 year-old players in the section with eighteen players represented from each of the 9 southern states. Awards were received for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in three divisions, gold, silver and bronze. Team’s North Carolina and Tennessee had a grudge match to determine 2nd and 3rd place in the gold division. In a huge final match North Carolina pulled out 6 doubles matches over Tennessee's 3 to capture 2nd place. The silver division teams were neck and neck until the final match on Sunday. Check out all the results below.

The weather was amazing for the entire weekend, temperatures stayed low and the sun was shining. All you need to do is walk around to notice that team spirit was everywhere you looked. The competition was tough and teams did everything they could to pump each other up and win. Sandy Hastings, Managing Director of Junior Competition for USTA Southern said, "It’s terrific for players to get a chance to compete together as a team, so often tennis is an individual sport. The USTA Southern Team Championships really gets the kids excited about playing and teaches valuable lessons about competition and sportsmanship."
