Family Circle Tennis Center Debuts New Junior Tennis Programs

July 17, 2006 04:33 PM

Growing the game of tennis has always been a top priority at the Family Circle Tennis Center, Charleston’s premier public tennis facility. Beginning the week of August 28th, the Tennis Center will debut its unique grassroots Junior Tennis Program open to children ages 3-18 in all skill levels. Four consecutive eight-week sessions will teach children the game of tennis in a fun atmosphere where coaches help the students achieve their goals in a positive structured environment.

The Family Circle Tennis Center will host a Tennis Block Party from 9:00am to noon on Saturday, August 12th to showcase the many tennis programs available for the whole family at this public facility, and to kick off the fall Junior Tennis Program session. This free party will include on-court activities with our professional teaching staff such as King / Queen of the Court, Fast Serve Contests, on-court Kid’s Tennis Carnival and Obstacle Course, as well as food and refreshments for everyone in attendance. All participants will receive a tour of the facility and be eligible for prizes and giveaways.

The new Junior Tennis Program is separated into four divisions to provide specific tennis instruction to children grouped by age and ability. All children ages 3 – 9 who start the new program will receive a free Prince tennis racket. As they progress through the program from the earliest years to teenage maturity, participants ascend a ladder of ability level beginning with technique, mobility, and accuracy. After constructing a solid foundation, students move to the next stage and address consistency, power, and self realization preparing them for junior tournaments, high school teams, and collegiate tennis opportunities.

Below are the four different new programs based on age and ability level:

1) Micro Cup Tennis is a fun-based program for children ages 3-5 that places an emphasis on basic hand-eye coordination and movement techniques held Monday and Wednesday from 3:00 - 4:00pm. Each participant will receive a free Prince tennis racket, and parents are encouraged to participate with their children in this clinic. The enrollment fee for the 8-week fall session is $150.

2) Junior Development Clinics (JDC) instruct children ages 6-9 & 10-12 as they learn stroke production, match play strategy, scoring, court etiquette, and receive progress evaluations to measure skills / improvement. Children 6-9 will play Tuesdays & Thursdays from 4:00 – 5:00 and receive a free Prince tennis racket. The enrollment fee for the 8-week fall session is $160. Children ages 10 – 12 will play Mondays & Wednesdays, and receive a free Tennis Tune-Up Bag. The enrollment fee for the 8-week fall session is $150.

3) Teen Tennis (T2) is a social-based fast track program for teens ages 13 – 18. A strong focus is placed on match play skill development and basic technical understanding of stroke, and court movement fostering personal achievement and goals is also emphasized. Match Play Wednesday (featuring supervised coaching) and a Tennis Tune-Up bag are included for free in this program. T2 classes offer instruction on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 5:00 – 6:30. The enrollment fee for the 8-week fall session is $345.

4) Junior Excellence Tennis Training program (Team JETT) provides high intensity training for Tournament Level Juniors emphasizing core training/conditioning, advanced technical stroke production, collegiate level strategy, and match play for the elite junior player on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 5:00-6:30pm. Match Play Wednesday (featuring supervised coaching) and a Tennis Tune-Up bag are included free in this program. This program requires instructor approval.
