Alabama's Hampton Gets Wildcard into Qualifying Round of French Open

May 3, 2006 02:17 PM
Jamie Hampton was awarded a wild card entry into the 2006 French Open women's singles qualifying draw after winning an eight-player event at the Brickell Tennis Club in Miami, Fla. this week. Hampton, 16, of Auburn, Ala., defeated Mary Gambale, 17, of Billerica, Mass., in the final of the wild card tournament, 7-6(5), 6-2.

The USTA invited a group of eight young American pros and top junior players to compete for the wild card. The field was divided into two groups that played round robin matches. Hampton and Gambale advanced to the final by winning their respective round robin groups. Other players who participated in the tournament were: Lauren Albanese, Madison Brengle, Julia Cohen, Kimberley Couts, Neha Uberoi and Reka Zsilinszka.

Currently ranked No. 2 in the USTA Girls' 18s rankings, Hampton reached the Girls' 18s singles semifinals at the Easter Bowl earlier this month. Last July, Hampton won the USTA Girls' 18s Clay Court Championships in Memphis and reached the doubles final.

Last year, Gambale won a similar tournament to earn a wild card into the qualifying draw at the 2005 French Open, and as part of a reciprocal arrangement with the French Tennis Federation, the USTA gave France's Pauline Parmentier a wild card into the 2005 US Open qualifying draw. The French Tennis Federation will designate a player to receive a wild card into the 2006 US Open women's qualifying draw.
