July 15, 2005 03:17 PM

Team Southern came out on top at the 2005 National 16's Intersectional tournament in Shreveport, LA. The third seeded Southern team upset number one seed Southern California 5-4 in the semi-finals, before crushing Team Florida with an 8-1 victory in the championship.

Teams representing each section of the USTA were present and competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions. Team Southern also posted wins over Intermountain, Southwest, and Mid Atlantic. Members of the championship team include:

  • Anamika Bhargava - Memphis, TN
  • Joanna Mather - Duluth, GA
  • Mallory Burdette - Jackson, GA
  • Laurianne Henry - Anderson, SC
  • Houston Barrick - Brentwood, TN
  • Ryan Smith - Marietta, GA
  • Jarmere Jenkins - College Park, GA
  • Rhyne Williams - Knoxville, TN
Coach - Rick Davison from Peachtree City, GA

"I am so proud of this great group of players because there is no question that they won by working hard all week and were prepared for doubles which usually determines which team wins," said Team Southern coach Rick Davison. "It was especially nice to win this event since it was in our own section. It is definitely impressive to have such a young group of players win an event of this magnitude and it shows how strong the level of play will be in the Southern Section in the future".
