Junior Team Tennis Reaches Record Numbers in Shreveport

March 15, 2005 09:10 AM

Four years ago, Middle School Team Tennis was no more than a way to recognize the local tournament participants. This year, as the league reaches record numbers of over 300 youth participants, it is much more than just acknowledgment.

Organizer and Tennis Professional at Querbes Tennis Center Richard Veerzaal says, “This is huge for Shreveport tennis. According to the USTA, Shreveport is the largest growing community among the nine southern states and this program specifically has contributed significantly to the growth of junior league tennis within the Southern Section.”

Middle School Tennis is a parent driven sport as we rely most on our parents to assist with organizing the teams for each match, communicating with other team parents and even picking up balls during play. We have also gained support from local professionals in and around the area, David Kimball of Southern Hills and Eddie Copete of East Ridge Country Club have both donated time with Richard to help beginners learn and understand the game.

This year the league hosted a jamboree at which players were given t-shirts and a chance to hit for prizes. The prizes given were donated by the local Community Tennis Association.

For information on the league and how your school can become a participant, call Richard Verzaal at (318)673-7787.
