Junior Family Circle Cup Celebrates 4th Year at Family Circle Tennis Center

February 11, 2005 04:15 PM

The Junior Family Circle Cup, one of the top junior tennis tournaments in the southeast, will be celebrating its fourth year at the Family Circle Tennis Center this month. This year State Farm, one of America's leading insurance companies, has signed on as presenting sponsor. With over 450 juniors expected to attend, this year's Junior Family Circle Cup will be one of the most well attended junior tennis events in the state. Participants include boys and girls, ages 8-18 from the local Charleston area, the State of South Carolina, southern region, and the nation. The Family Circle Tennis Center will once again serve as host site of the tournament being held from February 25 - 28 on Daniel Island.

The Junior Family Circle Cup is sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the USTA Southern Section and USTA South Carolina. Following the success of last year's tournament, the 2005 event has been raised to a Level 1 SC State Tournament. With that distinction the Junior Family Circle Cup becomes one of only five events in the state to earn that level. The tournament is also a Level 3 Southern Tournament, which means that players receive more ranking points per round than in a standard SC tournament. The event is open to girls and boys ages 10-18 and will feature five categories each: Boys' and Girls' Singles 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18. The last day to enter the tournament is Friday, February 18th at 5:00 p.m.

One of the highlights of the Junior Family Circle Cup involves the Girls' 18 Division. The winner of this division is awarded a direct entry into the Qualifying Draw of the 2005 Family Circle Cup with a wildcard invitation. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a young girl who dreams of playing tennis on a professional level. Last year's 18 Division winner was 15 year old Katrina Tsang from Raleigh, North Carolina. In the final she beat Yvette Hyndman from Bradenton, Florida with a score of 6-3, 6-1. During the 2004 Family Circle Cup qualifying, Tsang lost in the opening round to the qualifying draw's No.11 seed Severine Beltrame.
