Entry and Tournament Information

Eligibility: Entrants for the Girls’ 16 USTA National Championship must have been born on or after September 1, 1987. Entrants must meet their sectional requirements and have a current USTA card.

Entry: All entries must be entered via the internet. Click on usta.com and follow directions for registration. Payment will be made with a credit card via the internet. Your card will not be charged until you are accepted in the draw. You will be able to print a USTA Medical Release form. This must be signed by a parent or guardian and turned into the Tournament Director during on-site registration. You will not be allowed to play without this form. Entries open on June 3, 2004 and the deadline for Singles is July 15, 2004. Doubles entries close on Saturday, August 7 at 5:00 p.m.

Fees: Entry fee is $75. This fee covers singles, feed-in consolation and doubles. Entry fees will not be returned to players who withdraw after the draw is made.

Sectional Quotas: The Tournament Committee will accept entries based on the Sectional quotas adopted by the USTA Youth Training and Competition Committee. Contact your Sectional Endorser to determine if you are a Sectional quota player or on its alternate list. The top three finishers of the four National Opens are also automatically accepted into the draw. It is the responsibility of the players on the alternate list to check the USTA internet site as the site handles withdrawals and automatically adds players from the alternate list.

Wild Cards: The Tournament Committee shall accept junior players granted wild cards by the USTA Wild Card Committee and who have submitted timely entries. Up to eight wild cards will be given.

Alternates: Alternates shall be ordered using the National Standings List used to accept players into the draw. Alternates not on the NSL list shall be listed below the other players by the Tournament Committee. The list shall be published by July 20, 2004.

Singles: There will be a singles draw of 192 with a mandatory feed-in championship through the quarterfinals. The semi-final losers in the main draw will play-off for 3rd and 4th place. The feed-in championship winner and runner-up will be awarded 5th and 6th place.

Doubles: There will be a doubles draw of 96. Any player who desires to play doubles but cannot locate a partner should let the Tournament Committee know and the Committee will match the player with any entrant who does not have a partner and similarly informs the Committee. The Tournament Committee will do its best to provide partners for all the players who want to play doubles. All doubles teams must be registered by 5:00 p.m. Saturday, August 7, 2004.

Schedule of Play: Singles players must be ready and available to play at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, August 8, 2004. Players must report to the tournament desk 15 minutes before their scheduled match time. Match winners must report the results to the tournament desk and return the balls after each match. The player who lost must report to the feed-in championship desk. Doubles draws will be posted by 10 a.m., August 8 and doubles play will begin on Sunday afternoon, August 8, 2004.

Facilities: All matches will be held at the Barnes Tennis Center located in Mission Bay about two miles from downtown San Diego. From Airport, take Harbor Dr. right (towards Pt. Loma) to Nimitz Blvd. to right on W. Point Loma Blvd. (approximately 10 minutes).
Going south on Interstate 5, go west (right) on Sea World Drive, which will become Nimitz Blvd. after it crosses the bridge. Turn left on West Point Loma Blvd. and the entrance is on the left. Going north on Interstate 5, take Interstate 8 west to end, left on Nimitz Blvd, left on West Point Loma to entrance on left.

The Barnes Tennis Center includes 21 hard courts, 4 clay courts, a full-length basketball court, a ping pong room, a sand volleyball court and a Youth Activity Building which houses an academic room, library, snack shop, player lounge, sports science room and a large multi-purpose room.

Practice Courts: Practice courts will be available at the Barnes Tennis Center on Saturday, August 7th at 7:00 a.m. Players can reserve courts at the tournament desk by call (619) 221-9000. After tournament play begins, courts will not be available at the Barnes Tennis Center until the draw is reduced to permit practice time. Courts will be available at other sites in the immediate area.

Saturday Check-in: Plan to arrange your arrival on Saturday, August 7th. Check-in is at the Barnes Tennis Center between 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Signed medical releases must be turned in at this time. Players not attending check-in must fax their signed medical releases ahead of time to (619) 221-9076.

Orientation Meeting: On Saturday, August 7th at 4:30 p.m. all participants are expected to attend an orientation meeting and group picture at the Barnes Tennis Center. A complimentary barbecue for players will follow at 5:30 p.m. There will be a minimal charge for parents and guests.

Amenities: All players will receive T-shirts, gift bags and a complimentary action photo. Racquet stringing is available at the site and there will be a trainer on duty at all times during play.

Hotel/Housing: The nearby Dana Inn and Marina at 1710 West Mission Bay Drive, San Diego, CA 92109, (800) 445-3339, is the official tournament hotel. Reservations must be made by July 6, 2004 to receive the complimentary tournament rate. The Holiday Inn Bayside is also an official tournament hotel (800) 662-8899. Cut off date for reservations at this hotel are July 19th, 2004. Since San Diego is a resort town, we suggest your players make their hotel reservations as soon as possible.

Housing/Transportation: The tournament will not provide housing or transportation to unaccompanied players because of insurance requirements.

Awards: USTA Gold, Silver and Bronze balls will be awarded in singles and doubles. The tournament will provide awards for six singles places and four doubles places. A Sportsmanship Award shall also be made.

Balls: The Wilson Extra Duty tennis ball will be used.

Tournament Regulations: Participants are to be dressed in proper tennis attire. Matches will be the best two out of three sets with a 10-minute rest between the 2nd and 3rd sets. The 12 point tie-breaker will be used at 6-all in both singles and doubles in all sets. Coaching will not be permitted except during the break between the second and third sets. Play in the Feed-in Championships is mandatory.
