USA Team Tennis Sectional Championships Recap

August 19, 2003 10:27 AM

The best USA Team Tennis teams from around the USTA Southern Section converged on the Champions Club in Chattanooga last weeked with Regional and National berths on the line. Of the more than 50,000 USA Team Tennis participants in the USTA Southern Section, only 340 managed to qualify for the Sectional Championships. The modified round-robin tournament began play on Saturday morning and featured teams from eight of the nine USTA Southern Section states.

The best team tennis in the South was on display in four divisions: White Stars, White Stripes, Blue Stars, and Blue Stripes. Each team played two matches on Saturday to determine their groupings for Sunday's action. The first place teams from each division after Saturday were grouped together on Sunday. The same is true for the 2nd and 3rd place teams in each group as well. The top two teams in each of the White Stars and White Stripes Gold Division will go on to play in the USA Team Tennis Regional Championships in October against teams from Texas, Florida, and the Carribbean. The Blue Stars champion will advance to the AAU National Championships next summer in Detroit, while the Blue Stripes champion will head to Tucson, Arizona in November for the National Championships. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Southern Sectional Championships!
