Rain Does Not Deter Players at Bullfrog/STA 12’s Jr. Davis Cup/Fed Cup Championships

September 25, 2002 02:20 PM

Despite the daily rain that fell on the Champions Club in Chattanooga, TN, the 2003 Bullfrog/STA Jr. Davis/Fed Cup Championships were completed on schedule this past weekend. Over 50 of the top 12 and under junior players in the Southern Section competed in this exciting, fun-filled event, held from September 20-22.

The Agassi team, coached by Jimbo Hobson of Arkansas, won first place in the Gold Division. Team members included Mallory Cecil (SC), Kayla Duncan (NC), Jarmere Jenkins (GA), Trey Meyer (LA), Jourdan Smith (MS) and Matt Walters (AR).

The Ginepri team, coached by Michaela Quinn of North Carolina, took first place in the Silver Division. Team members included Tennys Sandgren (TN), Will McArthur (SC), Pierce Hoover (NC), Jordan Zachary (MS), Whitney Wolf (LA) and Lee Lyons (AL).

The Sampras team, coached by Christina Ladyman of Tennessee, captured first place in the Bronze Division. Team members included Richard Doverspike (GA), John McLemore (AL), Dylan Broussard (LA), Christy Core (NC), Jessica Morris (KY) and Morgan Carney (AL).

Overall the top state at this year’s event was North Carolina (see picture below). Collectively, NCTA players earned 24 ½ points. Georgia and Tennessee finished second and third, with 22 and 19 ½ points respectively.

While play was originally scheduled to take place at the Champions Club, on again, off again rain forced play indoors.

Two locations were used, the Baylor and McCallie Schools. The transition from outdoor to indoor play was smooth thanks to the tireless efforts of Champions Club Director Orlando Lourenco and the rest of the event volunteers and staff, including Tournament Director Lisa McCarthy and site director Mary Cook. Mary Pat Rogers coordinated the meals, feeding over 100 players and parents lunch each day.

The USTA Southern Section would like to thank our title sponsor, Bullfrog Waterproof Sunblock.
