BullFrog/STA Junior Davis/Fed Cup Championships Highlights

September 16, 2002 01:47 PM

Team Georgia edged Team South Carolina 14-13 to capture its eighth consecutive victory. The deciding match was in Girls 14 Doubles with Team Georgia’s Whitney Byrd and Jennifer Meredith edging Team South Carolina’s Hannah Blatt and Samantha Eppelsheimer. Team Tennessee finished in second place in the Gold Division.

The new Champions Club Tennis Center on the banks of the Tennessee River was the host site along with the GPS School. Tournament Director Rebekah Henry and Coordinator Eric Voges felt that this year’s finish was one of the most exciting ever. Due to rain on the last day, over 200 players, parents, friends and coaches were jammed into the Alex Guerry Indoor Center at the Baylor School for the final match.

Chattanooga’s great volunteers took care of the sites as well as the daily lunches. Tropical Storm Hannah tried to throw a wrench into the plans, but referee Richard Rogers and his umpires kept everything on track through the rain. Mary Cook, Bev Henry and STA Staff Coordinator Lisa McCarthy ran the sites most efficiently at both GPS and Champions Club.

The coaches were again among the best in the country. They included: Eph Walker and Buck Bobo from Alabama, Jake Shoemake and Chip Stearns from Arkansas, Craig Jones and Derek Ameel from Georgia, Dave Kunselman and Eddie Johnson from Kentucky, Hall Bohlinger and John Wahlborg from Louisiana, Walker Sahag and Mark Elliott from Mississippi, Shane Wells and Robert Stephens from North Carolina, Robb Thompson and Ben Simon from South Carolina and Rob Cameron and Shannon Dunkin from Tennessee.

The USTA Southern Section would like to thank our title sponsor, Bullfrog Waterproof Sunblock and the Chattem Company for their tremendous support. Thanks also to our supporting sponsors: Herb Adcox Chevrolet, Cingular Wireless, Powerade and Mr. T’s Pizza.
