Outstanding Tennis Highlights USA Team Tennis Sectional Championships

August 21, 2002 03:07 PM

The USA Team Tennis Junior Sectional Championships were held August 17-18 at the Winward Lake Club in Alpharetta, Georgia. State champion teams from all nine Southern Section states were in the field, and the tennis was out of this world. Despite the occasional rain shower, the tournament ran very smoothly thanks to the hard work of tournament directors Lisa McCarthy and Greg Grover, along with several volunteers. “It was a great tournament. Mother Nature didn’t exactly cooperate, but thanks to everyone’s hard work and positive attitude, the event was a huge success.”

The tournament used a round robin format, and each team had two matches on Saturday and two more on Sunday. The World Team Tennis system was used, with each team playing one boys and one girls singles match, one boys and one girls doubles match, and one mixed doubles match. Each match consisted of an eight-game pro set, with each game won counting as one point. Every set won earned the winners a bonus point. After all matches were completed, the total games and bonus points were tallied to determine the winning team. The top two teams from each division earned a trip to the USA Team Tennis Regional Championships at the Stone Mountain Tennis Center in October.

In the 3.5 and above Stripes Division, the Piper Glen Pitbulls from Charlotte, North Carolina took home first place, followed by the English Angles from Louisville, Kentucky and the River Hills Super Stars from Lake Wylie, South Carolina in second and third place, respectively.

In the 3.0 and below Stars division, Huntcliff from Lawrenceville, Georgia, took first place honors, followed by The Falls of Autry Mills of Alpharetta, Georgia, and Wildwood Crush of Columbia, South Carolina in second and third place.

Sportsmanship awards were given to one boy and one girl in each division, and this year’s recipients are Kelsey Cobb from Meridian, Mississippi, and Adam Margol from Alpharetta, Georgia in the Stripes division, and Tori Stevens from Athens, Georgia, and Will Dale from Nashville, Tennessee in the Stars division.

The USTA Southern Section wishes to thank and congratulate every team that participated in this event, and we hope to see you again next year!
