by Niketta Womack

The USA Tennis NJTL Regional Rally in Atlanta, on Saturday June 15, 2002, was a huge success. The North Fulton Tennis Center hosted a total of nine teams, consisting of local teams from the Atlanta area and also teams from Alabama. As the players entered the center for sign-in, each player was provided with a USA Tennis NJTL book bag, shirt, water bottle, cup, and washable tattoo. They were then divided into beginner and advanced levels, in which the beginners players enjoyed on court games and relays and the advanced players participated in drills and competitive games.

After a day filled with fun and games, “Bouncy”, the tennis ball mascot, joined everyone for pizza and drinks. During this time the “Entertaining Tennis Exhibition” was also taking place. The participants in the exhibition were Rob Mages and Ivo Barbic. Finally, all participants received medals and certificates at the award ceremony, which concluded the Regional Rally. The coordinators of this event were: Rob Mages, Georgia Tennis Association; Nomi Cosby, USTA Southern Section; Niketta Womack and Kelly Mickelson, USTA Southern Section Interns, and Ivo Barbic, Host Site Director.

Founded in 1881, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for the sport of tennis in this country. In addition to owning the US Open and selecting members of the Davis Cup, Fed Cup, and Olympic teams, the USTA administers a variety of programs nationwide for players of all ages and ability levels. A not-for-profit organization, the association is divided into 17 sections, of which the USTA Southern Section is the largest. The 152,000 USTA members living in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee make up the USTA Southern Section, and account for approximately 25% of the total USTA membership. A professional staff housed in Norcross, GA carries out the USTA Southern Section's daily operations, but policy is formed and much of the organization's work is executed via a Board and committee structure of over 200 volunteers.
