NCAA Passes Student-Athlete Legislation Starting This Year

February 25, 2010 10:32 AM

The NCAA has recently passed legislation that affects Division I tennis players starting in 2010.

NCAA Division I Proposal 2009-22 and Tennis

  • Allows prospective student-athletes to compete on a professional team so long as they do not accept payment in excess of actual and necessary expenses.
    • Examples: World Team Tennis, Club Tennis in Europe
  • It also reduces the grace period in tennis from one year to six months.

Effective date:

  • August 1, 2010 for participation on professional teams
  • August 1, 2011 for the six month grace period

What does this mean?

  • Prospective student-athletes will be able to play on professional teams as long as they DO NOT receive payments in excess of actual and necessary expenses.
    • This applies to all current PSAs who are entering college on or after August 1, 2010.
  • Tennis PSAs will have six months after HS graduation to enroll full-time at a collegiate institution.
    • Competition after six months will cause tennis PSAs to be charged with a season of competition and be required to sit out a year in residence upon enrollment at a Division I institution. .
    • ’09 HS grads who are taking a year off will be fine enrolling in Fall ’10 as planned.
    • ’10 HS grads who had planned to take 1 year off will need to review the new legislation.  Most likely this class will have to enroll for Spring ’11 OR cease competition 6 months after HS graduation.
Remember: student-athletes who enroll beginning in August 2011 and thereafter will be subject to the six month grace period.
