College Stars Honored By ITA

Congratulations to the following USTA Southern players who were named to the 2009 ITA All-America NCAA Division I Teams: Devin Britton (University of Mississippi), Taylor Fogelman (University of North Carolina), Davey Sandgren (University of Tennessee), Jay Weinacker (North Carolina State), Lindsay Burdette (Stanford), Mallory Cecil (Duke), Natalie Pluskota (University of Tennessee), Keri Wong (Clemson), Reka Zsilinska (Duke).

Freshmen Cecil of Spartanburg, S.C. and Britton of Jackson, Miss. both won the 2009 NCAA Division I singles title, making it the first time two freshmen have captured the men’s and women’s NCAA singles titles in the same year. Cecil also took the #1 Campbell/ ITA college tennis ranking with a 32-4 record at mainly the number 1 spot throughout the season. Britton finished #19 in the Campbell/ ITA college tennis rankings with a 29-9 record at mainly the #2 spot. Sophmore Reka Zsilinska of Fayetteville, N.C. also joined her teammate, Cecil in the top 20 Campbell/ ITA singles ranking with the #20 ranking and an overall season record of 41-8.

Sandgren, a junior, of Gallatin, Tenn. captured the top Campbell/ITA doubles college tennis ranking with partner John-Patrick Smith. The duo garnered an impressive overall record of 32-12 this season with a first-place finish in the 2009 Southeastern Conference Coaches' Indoor Championships and a second-place finish in the NCAA Division 1 Doubles Championships this May. The duo’s 32 wins this season ranks the third highest in Tennessee Vols’ doubles team history. Burdette, a junior, of Jackson, Ga. also finished with #4 Campbell/ ITA doubles ranking with partner Hilary Barte. The duo placed second in the 2009 NCAA Division I Doubles Championships after losing a close match to California's Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova.

To earn ITA All-America singles honors, a collegiate player must either be a top 16 seed in NCAA Singles Championships, reach the round of 16 in NCAA Singles Championships, or finish in the Top 20 of the final ITA Rankings. To earn All-America doubles honors, a collegiate player must be a top eight seed in NCAA Doubles Championships, reach the quarterfinals of NCAA Doubles Championship, or finish in the Top 10 of final ITA Rankings. Britton, Weinacker, Cecil and Zsillinszka received singles honors, while Fogelman, Sandgren, Pluskota, Burdette and Wong received doubles honors.
