Emory University Pair Sweep Division III Singles and Doubles Titles

May 20, 2003 11:09 AM
Mary Ellen Gordon of Emory University won the 2003 Division III Women's Tennis Singles Championship today after defeating her teammate, Jolyn Taylor, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

"If I had to lose this match, I'm glad it was to Mary Ellen," Taylor commented.

Gordon's big serve and powerful ground strokes were too much for her teammate to handle. Although Taylor battled back from a 1-4 deficit in the first set, she couldn't hold on for the win. The match concluded in 1 hour and 3 minutes.

Mary Ellen Gordon and Jolyn Taylor of Emory cruised by their opponents to earn the 2003 Women's Tennis Doubles title today. With big serves and solid play at the net, the Emory duo seemed unstoppable and tallied scores of 6-3, 6-2.

The Emory squad swept the championships by winning the team, singles and doubles titles. In addition, Emory will host the 2004 Women's Tennis National Championships.

Emory University also swept the men's and women's national team championships earlier this week.
