University of Tennessee Lady Vol Garners SEC Player of the Week Honors

March 25, 2003 08:42 AM

Senior Vilmarie Castellvi of the No. 10-ranked University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team (15-4) captured SEC Player of the Week honors today. She is the second UT player to be selected this season, joining classmate Crystal Cleveland, who earned the nod two weeks ago.

Castellvi, ranked third in singles and fifth in doubles with freshman Melissa Schaub, finished with a 3-0 record in singles and a 2-1 showing in doubles with Schaub in leading Tennessee to a pair of wins over No. 49 BYU and No. 8 North Carolina and a near victory over 4th-rated Duke. The Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, native is 33-4 on the year in singles and an incredible 18-1 at the No. 1 slot. Castellvi and Schaub are 21-5 this season and 14-4 at No. 1 doubles.

The senior kicked off her week with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Dominique Reynolds of BYU. She and Schaub were also victorious in their contest with the Cougars Leeza Klempner and Reynolds, 8-5. Their win clinched the doubles point for UT en route to a 7-0 blanking.

Against the Tar Heels, Castellvi and Schaub dropped their doubles match at the top spot, but the singles was a different story. Castellvi upended No. 11 Kate Pinchbeck in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, to move the Lady Vols within one point of securing a win over UNC. Sophomore Ashley Robards finished with a victory afterwards to assure UT of its 15th win.
