28 Countries Represented in Rock Hill Rocks Open

October 2, 2013 11:20 AM
Melanie Oudin plays at the Charleston tournament.
ROCK HILL, SC – Professional women tennis players from 28 countries are scheduled to compete in the 5th annual ROCK HILL ROCKS OPEN (RHRO) tournament Oct. 13-20.

One of the best known of those world-wide competitors lives not far from the site of the $25,000 USTA Pro Circuit event.

Melanie Oudin, 22, from Marietta, GA, turned pro in 2008 and gained fame in 2009 when she battled to the quarterfinal round of the US Open.  She was ranked as high as 31 in the world in 2010 in women’s singles tennis and will compete in Rock Hill.

Oudin, currently ranked 141, won the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event in Las Vegas, NV, in September. She beat fellow USA player CoCo Vandeweghe in a three-set final match. Vandeweghe, 21, will also compete in Rock Hill.

The highest ranked player in the 2013 RHRO is Ajla Tomljanovic, 20, of Croatia. Tomljanovic is ranked 86. She competed in the 2011 RHRO, making it to the quarter-finals. It will be the first RHRO event for Oudin and Vandeweghe.

The exciting RHRO tournament will be held on 11 outdoor hard courts at the Rock Hill Tennis Center located at 897 Maplewood Lane. All matches are played during daylight hours and are open free to the public.

Players on the Pro Circuit compete for prize money and ranking points. The circuit is the pathway to tour-level tournaments, including the US Open, for aspiring tennis players.

Many of today’s top stars, including Maria Sharapova, played on the Pro Circuit.  Several of these top-ranked players, including American players Jamie Hampton and Varvara Lepchenko, played in Rock Hill.

For more information, contact RHRO Tournament Director and Tennis Center Supervisor Kim Ozmon. The telephone number is 803-326-3842. The e-mail address is rhtc10s@cityofrockhill.com.
