Sunday, March 24, 2013

Once again, showers poured in the early morning on Sunday and forced the 9.0 semifinal playoffs/final and 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0 finals and 3rd/4th playoffs all indoors. Teams made their way to the beautiful Baylor School, Racquet Club of Chattanooga (Hixson, TN), and Manker Patten Tennis Center to play their final match before heading back home.

In the 6.0 division, Southern edged Pacific NW 2-1. The 7.0 division level saw Pacific NW defeat Northern California 2-1. In 8.0, Southwest made their way past Northern California 2-1, while Southern survived Northern 2-1. Congratulations to our 2012 Senior Mixed National Invitational champions and finalists.

Another kudos goes to our teams that competed in the 3rd/4th playoffs: Caribbean def. Florida 3-0 (6.0); Eastern def. Caribbean 3-0 (7.0); Pacific NW def. Florida 2-1 (8.0); and Northern California def. Southern California 2-1 (9.0).

A big thank you goes out to Orlando Lourenco, who was instrumental in getting the championship underway. Other big supporters of the championships are Tim Morgan from the Chattanooga Sports Committee and Ned Caswell. Thank you!!

I hope everyone enjoyed their time in Chattanooga. There were some major weather challenges, but everything seemed to run as smoothly as possible in terms of getting everyone transitioned to indoor facilities. We had a great tournament crew with us as well, and we couldn't have done this tournament without their volunteering the weekend to help run this event.

Saturday, March 23, 2013

Rains came down early Saturday morning, which moved all of the round robin matches indoors. Using Baylor School, Racquet Club of Chattanooga, and Manker Patten Tennis Center, the wonderful tournament crew was able to get 93 individual round robin matches played before 4:30 PM. Thanks to the players for their cooperation in making a smooth transition to the indoor facilities.

The semifinal playoffs for the 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 division levels were brought back outdoors to Champions Club. Tomorrow's final will be Pacific NW vs. Southern (6.0), Northern California vs. Pacific NW (7.0), and Northern California vs. Southwest (8.0). The 9.0 division level will play their semifinal matches on Sunday morning, which will have Northern vs. Northern California and Southern vs. Southern California in the showdown.

Friday, March 22, 2013

Despite an unfavorable weather forecast, the tournament was able to complete all its matches outdoors on Friday. The weather was reasonable, with temperatures capping out to 50 degrees with a minimal wind factor. Thank you to all of the participants for making the first (and biggest) day of the 2012 Senior Mixed National Invitational a successful one.

Players then got to experience the Player Party on the Southern Belle Riverboat at Pier 1. Nestled on the Tennessee River, players were treated to "southern" cooking, a deejay, and a riverboat cruise around the Tennessee River.
